Awards dinner another huge success in the IPS NA calendar

editorial image

The IPS (NA) 2014 Annual Awards Dinner was held on Saturday 1st November in the Stormont Ballroom of the Stormont Hotel.

Approximately 130 people attended the dinner and it was an extremely successful event, not only for the many IPS members and non members who attended, but in particular for the organising committee.

Everyone enjoyed the venue, the dinner, and the flowing presentation of awards.

Most importantly it was a great opportunity to socialise with those you usually only see at a pony show. The night was an opportunity to celebrate the success of all the riders and there were numerous rosettes, cups and special awards presented to all worthy winners.

After a most enjoyable meal, Steven Perry, Chairperson for the NA, welcomed all members, non members and invited guests.

He said a few words about the various successes of the NA during 2014 and thanked his committee members for all their hard work and commitment throughout the year. He also extended his thanks to everyone for their support at IPS (NA) shows during 2014 and wished everyone success in 2015.

He then handed over to Secretary, Susan Perry, to present the 2014 awards.

IPSNA National Points Awards

As always the first presentation of the night was the National Points Awards, which are always eagerly sought by the members.

Susan Perry passed on her congratulations to each of the Points Winners on their many successes and awards were presented by Mr Gerry McPolin, former committee member and Chairman of the IPS NA.

Younger and older members alike were very successful. Lisa Campbell, Cerys Howell, Phoebe Beaumont, Alexandra Ryan, Christina Devine, Aimee Dugan , Megan Dumigan, to name a few, all won a number of first place rosettes. Elaine Sherrard had another successful year and picked up awards for her Parkhill ponies in the youngstock and SP classes.

The Carlton Cup, presented by the McPolin family for the 143cm WHP with the highest national points, was again this year awarded to A Touch of Magic, this year owned and ridden by Emily Jayne McPolin.

The Parkhill Cantona Cup for the Irish Bred 133cm SHP with highest points was awarded again this year to Elaine Sherrard’s Parkhill Uptown Girl, while the Iorsa Little Gem Perpetual Tropy for the top Irish Bred 128cm SP with the highest national points was also awarded to Elaine Sherrard’s Parkhill Sir Alex.

NA Points of the Year Awards

Aimee Dugan was very successful in this section taking both the SP and SHP cups. The WH cup this year was presented to Sarah McPolin, whose sister Emily Jayne had won it last year. The Mini cup was won again by Ellie McDonnell. A new member for 2014, Lisa Campbell, won the M&M cup after a very successful year on her pony Bally G Comet. The Breeding and Youngstock cup was again won this year by Elaine Sherrard.

NA Points Pony of the Year

Both the Points Pony of the Year Award and the Points Reserve Pony of the Year Award were won by Elaine Sherrard for her ponies Parkhill Van Persie and Parkhill Scholes. Elaine is always very successful in this award section which is a great testament to the ponies that she breeds.

Silver League Awards

Again this year organisers were delighted that Bree Rutledge and her husband Paul were able to attend the awards dinner and Bree presented the awards for this section. The Silver League is open to both members and non-members and placings are hotly contested with points awarded at the Area Shows and the Ballynahinch Charity Show.

Awards were given for First to fourth place for each of the classes, which throughout the League had been very well attended and it is hoped that this will be the case again during 2015.

Jennifer Torrens was successful again this year winning the Novice SP cup for the third year in a row riding Elaine Sherrard’s Parkhill Sir Alex. For the second year Ciara Gilroy won the M&M WHP cup, this year sharing it with Cerys Howell. It was great to see Alexandra Ryan winning the Connemara Challenge cup with her pony Tuckmill Star, after a great year. This year it was great to see a variety of members and non members winning the various Silver League Awards.

NA Annual Show Championship Awards

Steven Perry, Chairman of the IPS NA, presented these awards. The Championship Show took place on a wet day in July this year, but nevertheless was extremely well attended.

So results were flowing and this year the cups were won by riders from both North and South of the border. It was great to see young rider Carol Ruttle, who had travelled up from the south for both the show and the awards dinner, winning the SHP cup.

Rachel Moore again won the Ridden Supreme Championship cup, albeit on a different pony, this time on Alex Spencer’s Parkdene Private Affair, having also won the Intermediate Ridden cup. Megan Dumigan, who has had a very successful showing season on her pony Underhill Pipedream won both the Part Bred Ridden cup and the Mini Supreme Championship cup.

Elaine Sherrard, who had earlier won the overall Breeding and Youngstock cup, was then presented with the In Hand Supreme Championship cup. Ciara Gilroy continued her successful night by being presented with the WH Supreme Championship trophy.

Special Awards

Talent is something that we in the Northern Area certainly have and the IPS President, Mr Jim Lilley was delighted to present the awards in recognition of this:

Highest Placed IPS Member competing overseas

This year NA were very fortunate to have a number of members travel to the UK to compete at a number of prestigious shows, namely the Royal Highland Show, BSPS and HOYS, to name but a few. NA members did not disappoint with fantastic results while there. Ellie McDonnell and her pony Goldengrove Sunrise did brilliantly at all the shows she attended and took many championship classes. Ellie also won a Supreme title at BSPS. Ellie and Goldengrove Sunrise won both the highest placed Irish Bred SP and SHP competing overseas and also won the Highest placed IPS member competing at BSPS. This was a great result for Ellie.

HOYS Awards

The NA Committee were absolutely delighted to be able to present three awards for riders qualifying and competing at HOYS 2014. Rachel Moore was the first to accept her award for coming ninth in the 153cm WH class. Ellie McDonnell and Goldengrove Sunrise were placed a brilliant fifth place in the 133cm SHP class and accepted her award from Jim Lilley.

But without doubt the highlight of this section was the presentation to Jodie Creighton and Stambrook Miss Bellini. Jodie won the 133cm WH class and went on to take the WH Championship at HOYS. An unbelievable result and it is believed this is the first time a NI rider has won a championship at HOYS. A video of Jodie taking her lap of honour was shown and all applauded to the famous HOYS championship music. Jodie then came to the floor to accept her award from Jim Lilley to a standing ovation, a fitting reward for this young rider, who did brilliant at HOYS 2014. A massive well done to Jodie!

Most Improved Riders

A particular highlight of the awards evening is always the acknowledgement of those riders who have made significant progress during 2014. This year the Most Improved Flat Work Rider Award was won by Jessica Mulgrew who has successfully progressed in her riding skills during the year. The Most Improved Working Hunter Rider Award was presented this year to a new member who has progressed extremely well throughout the year at the Area Shows – Darcey Steenson.

Highest Placed IPS Member at IPS Championship Show in Cavan 2014

The NA was extremely proud of all its members who won numerous titles during the Summer Championship Show in August in Cavan. However, the NA wanted to recognise the success of young Ellie McDonnell who with Brynoffa Jonquil won the Reserve Supreme title.

Cavan Team Awards

This year the NA was delighted that seven teams took part in the Cavan Team competition at the Summer Championship Show.

Organisers were even more pleased when two of the teams were in the top three. The ‘Red Team’ consisting of Emily Jayne McPolin, Sarah McPolin, Christina Devine and Jessica Mulgrew were placed third. However, the highlight was the ‘3 Counties Team’ which was made up of Hannah Dumigan, Megan Dumigan, Jodie Creighton and Ellie McDonnell.

With their combined results during the show, they were placed in first place. They came to the floor to accept the new perpetual trophy which was presented to the Show by Mr Jim Lilley. So it was fitting that Jim was able to be with members this year at the dinner and was therefore able to present the new cup to the winning NA team.

Robin McCabe then spoke to all about the team spirit and spoke briefly about the intention to send a team(s) to the European WH Championships at BSPS next year.

Breeders Award

An award was presented to Elaine Sherrard for the success of her Parkhill ponies at HOYS.

Personality of the Year Award

Without doubt one of the highlights of the Awards Night is always the presentation of the ‘Personality of the Year Award’. This year, the decision was not a hard one for the committee! The 2014 award was presented to Tracey Howell who accepted the award in the spirit that it was meant and came to the stage to accept her award to rapturous applause and to the tune of Benny Hill! Well done Tracey!

Susan Perry thanked the many people who had contributed to the success of the Northern Area in 2014. The Committee would like to thank Asis Photography for taking all the photographs on the evening.

The IPS Northern Area would like to wish all its members and competitors a successful showing season in 2015.
