A RECORD number of schools from all across Northern Ireland travelled to the MEC to compete in the first leg of the Inter-Schools Showjumping league, sponsored by Lincoln.

The day started off with the primary school team competition. This was a very close call with a very high standard of jumping once again. However it was the Funky Fillies (Charlotte Harding, Jessica McConnell, Laura McKay) who finished in first place with 10 points. Second place was claimed by Fairhill Primary School and in third place were Downshire/ Meadowbridge Primary Schools.

It was then time for the Primary School Individual class. Cerys Howell came in first place with a lightning speed of 26.33, Hanna Agnew took second place and Cerys Howell on her on pony Joe From Raphoe, also claimed third place.

It was then time for the Novice Team competition with Belfast Royal Academy coming in first position with a really great performance (Amber Vick, Mimi Joffroy, Victoria Minford, Victoria Beattie). Victoria College clinched second place and Our Lady’s Newry followed closely in the third.

Cerys Howell claimed her second class of the day in the Novice Individual Competition with a brilliant time of 28.28 – Abby Morton finished in second place and Cerys Howell claimed third position again, what a day for Cerys.

The afternoon session started off with the Open Team Competition and a great performance from St Joseph’s Grammar who were last to go, their combined time of 115.59 with a double clear ensured they finished in first place. Well done to (Niamh McArdle, Ellie McArdle, Niamh Ward, Ellie McArdle) Second place was awarded to ‘All Mixed Up’ and The Royal School Armagh took third place.

Finally it was time for the Open Individual Competition. Congratulations to Aisling Monaghan with a time of 32.27 who took first place, closely followed by Phoeboe Scott just two seconds behind, and Sarah Bradshaw took third place.

Well done to all those riders from both primary and secondary schools who took part on the day. It was a wonderful start to the schools jumping and the high standards from everyone involved was very impressive.

Organisers wish to thank the judging panel lead by Dora Beacon. Thanks also to new sponsors Lincoln, and to Judy Maxwell from Baileys Horse Feeds for their sponsorship. Thanks to Heather Geddis for choosing the winners of the ‘Best Turned out’ throughout the day.

The second leg of the inter-schools showjumping league is being held on Saturday 13th October 2012, entries close on Wednesday 10th October. And don’t forget unregistered horse and pony showjumping continues this Saturday 6th October at the MEC.
