Charlene Wilson Show goes from strength to strength

THE 12th Charlene Wilson Memorial Show was another very successful event.
With the showjumping running from 11am until 6pm, and competitors coming from all over Co Tyrone, Co Fermanagh and Donegal to support this family show, the organisers were delighted.
The inclement summer weather resulted in Arena 2 having to move to the Indoor as the grass arena was very soggy underfoot. But this did not dampen the enthusiasm of all the competitors who took part in the jumping, the Family Pony Class, the Ridden Cob Class, the Pet Show and the ever popular Donkey Derby.
The Donkey Derby was as hotly contested as ever and the eventual winner was Clabby Boy ridden by Zac Kyle. The Donkey Showing Class was won by Joshua Kyle’s, Solomon.
10 beautifully turned out children and ponies lined up for the Family Pony Class, sponsored by Vera Thompson, and the winner of the Perpetual Cup for 2012 was Joseph Owens and his lovely coloured pony, Indian Spirit.
The Ridden Cob Class, kindly sponsored by Omagh Equestrian and Countrywear, was again a fine display of immaculately turned out cobs. The winner was Lynsey Martin and The Real McCoy.
Raymond Caldwell, assisted by Pamela, designed excellent courses which resulted in numerous double clears and very exciting jump-offs in the Open Classes. As in previous years the Perpetual Trophies were a great incentive for the competitors to pull out all the stops to have the honour of taking a trophy home!
There were two new trophies unveiled at the Show, the Ecclesville Cup for the 128 Novice Class, which was awarded by Colm McCullagh, Ecclesville Manager to local girl Caoimhe Hegarty and Its Chico Time. The 148 Novice Smyth Memorial Cup was presented to Katie McClintock and Buster by Sandra Magee and Jennifer Leonard in memory of their parents, Aubrey and Peggy Smyth.
At 3pm the Show came to a halt to remember Charlene. This year Charlene’s father, David, her brother, Herbert and his daughter Rhianne, Sandra and Rachel Magee, were accompanied by Dean Lyons riding Princess Mayo, Justine Lyons on Ever So Clever, Jodie Lyons and Camowen Bullet and Nicole Lyons and Bubbles. Dervla Martin sang beautifully as the procession made its’ way to front of the Indoor Arena. A very fitting tribute was made at this stage by Seamus Kane, from Portmore Equestrian Centre in memory of Charlene.
David Wilson then made a very moving tribute and held a minutes silence for young Hannah Wiley who died so suddenly on Friday as a result of a horse riding accident. It was a very poignant moment in a day when Charlene’s short life is celebrated and remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wiley family at this very difficult time.
The Top Score was very popular this year and with the cottage fence as the 200 point obstacle the competitors had to rise to the challenge! Aishling Monaghan and Murphy took on this challenge with ease and with a very impressive score of 1005 she claimed the perpetual shield sponsored by David Wilson.
A new novelty class was added to The Run & Ride and Top Score Classes, the Knicker Swap was hilarious for the spectators as a rider negotiated a small course of jumps and then had to swap an enormous pair of knickers with their partner, before they remounted and jumped the remainder of the course!! It was a very exciting class with a large crowd cheering on the competitors!! The eventual winners were Naomi Duncan and Pure Inspiration and Aishling Monaghan and Murphy. The Run and Ride Class was also eagerly awaited and with some of the runners having a few thrills and spills, the triumphant winners were Hannah Leonard, runner, and Caitilin Taggart and Prince.
Sincere thanks go to Raymond and Pamela Caldwell, the extended Wilson family, Leonard family, Duncan family, Magee family, Lyons family, Michelle O’Neill, Gillian Hynes and Stephen Clements. With a great team of volunteers this show continues to go from strength to strength and the organisers are indebted to them for their assistance. The organisers are also grateful to the staff at Ecclesville Centre for their support.
Professional photographs were taken at the event and can be viewed and ordered from KGB Photography’s web-site.
The chosen charity for 2012 is the MS Society as the organisers wish to support the work they carry out in the local community and throughout N Ireland. A cheque will be presented to the charity in the near future.
