For the first time last week the sun was shining as Kilkeel and District Riding Club kicked off their Easter Show at Mourne Equestrian Centre on Saturday 4th April 2015.

With the sun shining, the beginner’s x-pole class started off the afternoon brilliantly with some close competition.

Andrew Hanna on Mr AC Drummer competing at his first show jumping competition won the draw for first place, with Grainne Rooney taking a second place on
Chelsea. Amy Burden on Billy and Melissa McKinstry on Coco put up a good fight, just missing out on the top placings.

In the Novice class, first was Charley Hanna on Mr AC Drummer, second was Alex Russell on Sempers Belle, third Amy Burden on Billy, fourth was Melissa McKinstry on Coco and fifth place went to Grainne Rooney on Chelsea.

The Intermediate class saw plenty of competition with only three riders not making it into the jump off. Charley Hanna took first place on Hazy, closely followed by Tierna Harper on Jessie in second. Third place went to Cara Cunningham on Prince, fourth was Andrew Niblock on Lady and in fifth place was Kerry Cunningham on Molly.

Proceedings progressed to the Open class where only three competitors out of five gained double clears to make it into the jump off. The winner of this class was Melissa McBurney on Garvagh Rose, followed by Jason Hanna on Trigger in second place and Charley Hanna on Hazy in third. Cara Cunningham and Caroline Harper just missed out on making the jump off.

The beautiful sunny evening finished off with the intense Grand Prix class. Caroline Harper on Sheik was zooming around the jump off, managing to take first place over Jason Hanna on Trigger.

Once the showjumping classes came to a successful and exciting end, it was on to the pony games. After a few teething problems, tumbles and excitable horses, the “Little Chicks” consisting of Tierna Harper and Charley Hanna were successful against “An old fart and an Aul hen” consisting of Jason Hanna and Melissa McBurney by three points to one.

Organisers wish to thank all those who turned out on such a lovely afternoon to compete and have a bit of fun. Thanks also to Charlie Wilson for the use of his arena. Organisers hope to see you all at the next few events:
