Five-day championship marathon at Meadows

The Summer Championships organised by the Meadows Equestrian Centre took place last weekend.

Torrential downpours during the Sunday caused the show to be postponed by the Organising Committee and the Ground Jury, with the support of many of the assembled riders due to compete.

Returning on Monday 24th, riders were met by glorious sunshine, a stark difference from the deluge experienced the previous day. Over the weekend over 1000 entries were taken to the arenas at the Lurgan based centre, with superb jumping noted in both sand arenas.

NAF Five Star Amateur Championship

An air of excitement descended on the MEC for the Amateur Leddy League qualifier. Fabulous prizes awaited those lucky winners of the class, which was very kindly sponsored by Natural Animal Feeds (NAF).

In a fantastically quick second round the clock stopped at 32.83 not once but twice, resulting in Francis Mellet and Joanna Curran being crowned at NAF Champions for 2015.

Northern Ireland Horse Board Four Year Old Championship

With qualifiers throughout the championships, 30 four year old horses qualified for the final with a prize fund of £5000 supported by the Northern Ireland Horse Board. Under the watchful gaze of judges including Mike Florence, it was Elizabeth Cash’s Sièc Livello gelding ‘Balinteskin Leroy’ that would take the lions share with Eddie Moloney. Scoring an impressive 104 the grey gelding led the field as the only horse to score over 100 points.

TRM National Grand Prix

Darryl Walker gained a comfortable margin on the TRM/Horseware National Grand Prix leader board with a win onboard ‘Cushions’.

The last rider in an eight horse decider, Walker took all the risks to claim the victory in the Craigavon Commercial Dismantlers sponsored Grand Prix worth €4,000 when posting an unbeatable time of 36.39 seconds.

Having made it double handed to the jump-off Walker also secured sixth place in the line-up with Riverside Ace, the fastest four faulter when home in 36.44.

Cushions has been a consistent performer for Walker this season. Currently the leading horse in the league, the Flex-A-Bill-sired mare has picked up numerous placings in the league with Saturday’s win as her third victory this season.

Walker said: “She just wants to win, she has been very consistent.”

With only two legs remaining, Walker’s cushion of 14 points is an important margin but not a guarantee of the title.

One rider to prevent him from achieving the title is 2014 National Grand Prix League champion Vincent Byrne who took not only the runner-up position but also third place. Byrne set the original target to beat at a clear round in 39.23 with Caugherty before bettering his own standard aboard Mr. Rockefeller when across the line in 36.70. Byrne currently sits just below Walker on the leader board.

Clem McMahon took the green rosette on this occasion, partnered with Claddagh Iroko. McMahon logged a fault free round in a time of 39.78 with the eight-year-old son of Iroko. Robert Frazer and Sonas Magnum were the only other combination to supply a clean sheet on their second outing, slightly off the pace in 43.41.

TRM/Horseware Premier Grand Prix Final

Nicola FitzGibbon stole the limelight in the final round of the TRM/Horseware Premier Series when winning the grand finale with Lady Georgina Forbes’ Poker des Dames. FitzGibbon put in a show stopping performance to claim the lion’s share of the €10,000 purse on offer kindly sponsored by Clive Richardson Ltd.

With all eyes on the leader board heading into the final round, Fitzgibbon came in under the radar to claim the final victory of the season. Taking full advantage of a late draw, FitzGibbon came home with over a second to spare when stopping the clock in 40.00 seconds.

FitzGibbon has been partnered with the 12-year-old Nabab de Reve sired gelding since the beginning of the season and has featured consistently throughout the year. While Monday was their first Premier victory together, FitzGibbon and Poker des Dames have shown this sort of form when winning both legs of the TRM/Horseware National Grand Prix League at Omagh and Tattersalls.

FitzGibbon may have won on the day but it was Alexander Butler who took the Premier Series outright as well as the title of National Champion for the second time. The league remained all to play for heading into the final round  with the top five all capable of winning due to points and a half on offer.

Butler triumphed as the only one of these to make it through to the timed decider and finished the day in style when taking third place with Hallowberry Cruz, posting the fastest time of the day, 39.96, albeit with a total of four faults.

Butler commented: “Having achieved this once I had always aimed to do it again. It’s been my plan from the start of the year. Hallowberry Cruz also got leading horse which is great for his owners Caroline and Paul Byrne.”

Deane Rogan took the runner-up position in Grand Prix with Falco Van Spieveld.  Fresh from a top four finish in the international Grand Prix at Millstreet, Rogan had held the lead in the five strong jump-off when the clock recorded 41.16 with nothing to add.

Francis Connors had put in a solid attempt at a double clear with Erne Ladygoldilocks but unfortunately faulted on the way home and had to settle for eventual fourth place in the line-up.

Frank Curran, coming through carrying four faults from the first round, added a single error to that score with New World to finish on a total of eight in a time of 41.13.

Vincent Byrne filled the final place in the top six with four faults in the first round in a time of 77.52 with Mr. Rockefeller.

ISH SJ Series Finals

The final leg of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2015 took place at The Meadows Equestrian Centre. As well as the final classes for five, six and seven year old Irish Sport Horses, the three leagues were to be decided based on points gained at the Co Armagh venue. All classes at the last leg were run against the clock. Horse Sport Ireland had €13,550 on offer in prize money, including league and breeders prizes.

The Five Year Old Final, took place on Sunday morning. After the first round, there were nine horses through to the jump-off. However, due to poor weather conditions, it was decided to postpone the show. The nine riders in the Five Year Old Final decided to split the win and share the €3,150 prize fund. The Five Year Old League winner was MHS Attraction (ISH) and David Moran.

The six and seven year old finals were rescheduled for Monday morning. The first final of the day was the six year old final. Seven horses jumped clear in the first round to make it through to the jump-off. Jumping double clear in a time of 36.12 seconds, Edward Butler and AHG Whiterock Luis (ISH) took the Six Year Old Final and the lion’s share of the €2,700 prize fund. Also jumping double clear were Francis Connors and Drumiller Houdini (ISH), who were crowned Six Year Old League winners.

The Seven Year Old Final, again saw seven combinations making it through to the jump-off. Winning the class was Clem McMahon with Charlotte Gibson’s Aldaluck (ISH). The 7 Year Old League winner was Cormac Rafferty and KMR Benzini (ISH).
