The eagerly awaited final of the Meadows Equestrian Centre’s TRI Inter-Schools Showjumping League took place on Saturday on a rather cool but glorious spring day.

The pressure of the final certainly took its toll with some of the most consistent combinations failing to secure the all important double clears which created great anticipation as to how the final league placings would pan out.

This was very evident in the Novice Team Event where victory on the day, went to a delighted team from Our Lady’s Grammar in Newry who have been relatively consistent each month, finishing over seven seconds faster than runners up, Newbridge College.

Again, this year, the success of the MEC League has led to an invitation for the winning teams and individuals to travel to the All Ireland Inter-Schools Show Jumping Final in Kildare in April.

When the calculations for the Novice Team League placings were completed, it revealed a decisive victory for Ballymena Academy with Our Lady’s Grammar in Newry taking second place.

Mayor of Craigavon, councillor Colin McCusker, was on hand to present the prizes in the Novice Team Event as well as in the Primary competitions.

Individually, in the Novice section it was a fast and furious competition with the indomitable partnership of Hannah Thompson and Sophie picking up top spot for the fourth time this season. This left them impossible to beat in the League table although consistent good form from Wallace High School pupil, Kerry Magill, partnering Flapjack Flyer, guaranteed them a second position.

Our Lady’s Grammar School in Newry picked up its second victory of the day in the Open Team event in a competition where team nerves clearly got to some of the competitors. Our Lady’s was actually the only team to finish on a zero score.

However, centre place on the League podium was reserved for a delightful duo from Cambridge House, Charlotte Harding and Nikki McNeice followed by St Catherine’s College in Armagh in second place.

The Premier Individual competition has turned into a showjumping showcase. Taking top spot this month was Tori Surgenor and Rocket Lady from Ballymena Academy- a school which has certainly made its mark in this year’s competition. Shannon Robinson from Larne Grammar won the League overall with Auburn Luna with Tilly Horder and Duke from Down High School claiming a well deserved second place.

Meantime, action in the Primary section got underway in Arena 2 with a very excited group of 11 year olds and under. They have provided plenty of excitement and entertainment over the past five months and this month was no exception. The Rascals Team started the day with a convincing lead but they did not rest on their laurels and went on to claim their third victory of the season with The Mighty Midgets nipping at their heels.

In the individual section, where blinking could easily have meant you missing a round, it was Spa Primary School pupil, Megan Nelson who ‘Flashed’ around the arena to win the class ahead of Finn Osborne and Daz from Poyntzpass who, again, has been very consistent.

However, League victory went to Emma Jane Orr and Badbury Blackthorn, who have never been out of the top six placings, finishing ahead of second placed Finn Osborne and Daz.

The Meadows Equestrian Centre would like to thank the sponsors, TRI Equestrian, Craigavon Borough Council and Judy Maxwell of Baileys Horse Feeds whose generosity and support of the League is very much appreciated. Thanks, too, to all the Judges, Starters and Arena Parties in both locations as well as all the schools, together with their chefs d’equipe, who supported this very popular League.

The next Schools’ competition at The Meadows Equestrian Centre takes place on Monday 17th March with a ‘Saint Patrick’s Schools’ Special’. Full details are available on the MEC website.

There is also a Charity Schools’ Competition at The Meadows on Bank Holiday, Monday 4th May. Full details will be available shortly.
