MEMBERS and friends of the Northern Ireland Branch-British Driving Society met on Tuesday 1st January 2013 at the home of Mr and Mrs George Fawcett and family, 20 Craigy Road, Saintfield, to hold the annual New Year Private Drive.

This is the first drive of the season and the spectators and participants enjoyed the winter sunshine and the beautiful surrounding countryside.

The cavalcade of horse drawn vehicles left number 20 at 1pm to drive through the historical village of Saintfield and along the country roads enjoying the scenery and the young lambs skipping about in the fields.

The cavalcade was lead by John Powell and Robert Berry (farm manager, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum) driving George Fawcett’s pair of Friesian horses ‘Rikardi and Yankee’ to a Landau, followed by Lindsay Hanna, BEM, and by Christopher Hanna driving ‘Major and Joshua’ to a wagonette. Mervyn Ward (Ballyward) was accompanied by his partner Liz. Kelly and family drove a pair of Welsh Cobs ‘Fronarth Cardi Express’ and ‘Fronarth Navigator’ to a Victoria, Pamela Marshall and George Fawcett yoked a pair of Friesian horses ‘Tzitse and Yagermeister’ to a wagonette. Alex Fawcett accompanied by John Gourley drove ‘Ludo’ to a Hartland Exercise Vehicle, Jimmy Creighton (Saintfield) accompanied by grandson Ruari drove his cob ‘Felix’ to Bellcrown Vehicle.

Wallace Shaw (Castlewellan) vice Chairman of Mourne and District Driving Club, drove his Hackney Pony ‘Smokie’ to a Road Vehicle. Also participating in the drive-out were Trevor and Lynn Gass accompanied by sons Richard and Samuel from Glenanne, Co Armagh, John and Cathy McGahey and son Josh (Ballyclare), Terry and Denise Taylor (Newtownards), Laurence Pedlow (Lurgan), Thomas and Joanne Magill (Newcastle) Laurence and Patrick Murdock (Drumbo).

Chairman Mr Eugene Larkin behalf of Northern Ireland Branch- British Driving Society, thanked Mr and Mrs George Fawcett and family for hosting the event and for the much appreciated hospitality. All proceeds will be donated to Parkinson’s Disease.
