The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby lost a lot of it's gloss when favourite and Epsom Derby winner New Approach was withdrawn on Sunday morning, the Jim Bolger star having sustained a bruised foot, writes RON McKNIGHT.
The Irish trainer had advised of the problem on Friday but despite hopes his team at Coolcullen could remedy the foot problem, time ran out and the colt owned by Princess Haya wife of Sheikh Mohammed who indirectly sponsors the premier Irish classic had to be pulled out.
The race produced a weak renewal for the first running under the Dubai sponsorship and events in the concluding stages left the form of the winner Frozen Fire, one of five Aidan O'Brien trained runners, worthless.
Alessandro Volta had hit the front after stablemate Hindu Kush had pulled of the rail to allow his stable companion a clear passage up the inside on the bend into the straight.
Alessandro Volta, the O'Brien trained number one with stable jockey Johnny Murtagh aboard was making the best of his way home until a furlong from home when veering left almost bringing down the challenging Curtain Call and continued his swerve towards the stands side in the process cannoning into race favourite Tartan Bearer pushing that colt also towards the stands side.
It was a demolition Derby in the finish. Tartan Bearer and Casual Conquest (runner up Irish Derby] had finished second and third at Epsom behind New Approach but the chaos in the closing stages left the form with many question marks as Frozen Fire (11th at Epsom] came from last to first on the wide outside to record back-to-back victories in the classic for jockey Seamie Heffernan following Soldier of Fortune last year while Aidan O'Brien was matching the legendary Vincent O'Brien former Master of Ballydoyle with six Irish Derby wins.
The record breaking and Champion Irish trainer said: "All we wanted was an even, strong gallop and this is great for everyone involved as there are so many people in the team who make this happen.
"All of ours have ran great races, but I think Alessandro Volta got stage-fright when he turned into the straight and he wouldn't have seen a crowd like that in front of him before.
"This is a very special race and is a full test over a mile and a half. The Curragh is probably the greatest racecourse in the world as it is a very fair track and really tests a horse over a mile and a half."
Following a stewards inquiry Alessandro Volta, which finished third, was demoted to fourth and Tartan Bearer fourth was promoted to third but it was amazing the principal casualty Curtain Call remained in fifth place behind the horse that precipitated all the problems.
The worth of the form of the principal Irish classic is further underlined by the sixth placed another Ballydoyle runner, Bashkirov which only opened his account in a weak Maze six runner maiden the previous week and rated 82 and used as a pacemaker in the Epsom Derby and was 4 3/4 lengths only behind the Irish Derby winner.
Plans for New Approach on Monday were on hold pending a definitive diagnosis of his foot injury reported trainer Jim Bolger.
