DESPITE dreadful weather conditions there was a strong turn out for all classes at the 63rd Annual Saintfield and District Agricultural Show.

In the early classes of the day Judge Jane Darragh found her first Champion: Show Pony Young Stock Champion, in J & T Harper's Ravara Benjamin Bunny with David Johnston's yearling, Portia taking Reserve Champion. In the Ridden ring, Margaret Miller was presiding over strong competition in the M&M Classes, finding her Champion in Valerie Dumigan's Carwood Xanthus and Reserve in Gloria Campbell's Brilyn Spirit Bay. In the Shetland Pony Classes, Glenlough Stud had a very successful day, picking up both Champion and Reserve Champion with HRE Hobbitt and Glenlough Perception respectively
In the afternoon Judge Genny Belton, judged the family pony classes. These classes were the biggest classes of the day. The Lead Rein class was won by Lucy Savage on Star and Rachel Kelly won the Ridden Class on her pony, Peaceful Paradise. The new trophy for family pony champion, kindly donated by Crown Chauffeur was won by a delighted Lucy Savage.
A new addition to our schedule this year was an Original Kerry Bog Pony class. This was a strongly contested class and gave us all an opportunity to see the best of this unique breed. The class was won by Laura Donnelly with her pony Irelander Erin Lily. This was Laura's first show and she was delighted not only to win the class, but to go on to take Reserve M & M In Hand champion.
Despite the deteriorating weather conditions, the classes in the afternoon remained strong with both Judges remarking on the quality of ponies on the day, in the ridden and breeding and young stock classes. Ridden Show Pony Champion was won by M Letters: Brookwater Lord of the Light ridden by Lauren Finn with Gloria Campbell's Brookvale Posy taking Reservc. Ridden Show Hunter Champion went to Rachel Moore's Fortview Silverstone with Eirin Corbett on Whitemere Jenny Wren taking Reserve.
With two new trophies on offer for our Mini Champion and Reserve Mini Champion there was a strong turn out for the Mini Championship at the end of the day. The Champion's silverware and sash went to Gillian Creighton's Kenilwood Monarch. Lauren Houston riding Mountain Gemma was Reserve Champion. This is Laurens first year in the saddle - so congratulations to her!
In the final Supreme Championship, Margaret Miller chose her Supreme Champion as J & T Harper's 3 year old Show Pony - Ravara Benjamin Pony with Reserve Supreme going to Rachel Moore, riding Fortview Silverstone.
The organisers of the Pony Showing section would like to extend their sincere thanks to our Judges, Margaret Miller, Jane Darragh and Genny Belton for their forbearance in what were dreadful weather conditions. Also thanks to all our stewards and volunteers who stuck with us throughout the day and, without whom, running the show would not be possible.
