Top riders entertain the crowds at Cavan


15th International Horse Show a great success

Cavan Equestrian Centre's 15th International Horse Show took place from the 5th – 9th November and was a great success.
This event continues to provide many thousands of spectators with a fantastic showjumping spectacle.
A range of national and international classes kept the showjumpers and audience alike on the edge of their seats.
The first two days comprised of
qualifiers for the finals on the subsequent days.
One of the early highlights on Thursday evening was the three year old loose jumping championship final, sponsored by Drumhowan Stud. Qualifiers for this final had already taken place in the preceding weeks and the final itself was a taste of things to come from these very talented and well bred three year olds. Andrea Etter stallion Abalou Verte emerged victorious on the night taking first, this stallion is by Ramiro 2. Second place went Michael McCann Colt Mullentine Dollar Boy, by Cavalier. Third went Done Cruisng owned by Lisa Doogan and Claire Doyle.
The international competitions got underway on Friday.
The first international was sponsored by Gain Horse Feeds and 56 competitors took part, competing for a prize fund of €2,500. Peter Smyth from Victoria Bridge, won this event on Hygie Du Golfe owned by Pat Podmore. Second place went to Andrew Bourns on Callaighstown Cruiser, owned by the Shirley North. Third place went to Raphael Goehrs of France of his own horse Mistrial de Ravalet.
The second international competition followed on immediately and it was equally as popular with an even greater prizefund of €4,000. This event was sponsored by WKD and it was organised as a jump off challenge.
Paul O'Shea emerged victorious on Daydream St. Ghyvanz owned by Michael Walsh and Paul Clarke. Second place went to talented young rider Gerard Clarke, from Ballivor on his Dads horse Kellswater Crimson which was purchased at the Cavan Sales. Third place went to Lucy Buchanan on Cavalier.
Saturday's events began with the last of the qualifiers for many of Sunday's events. On Saturday morning, the first of the national finals, the 1.10m took place with a prize fund of €1,500 and 33 competitors took part.
The winner was Conor Drain on his Mothers horse, Tripoli, Emoe Bailey with Ita McDermott came second. David Blake of Co Clare came third on Nasib, owned by Paul Kinane.
Another national class highlight on Saturday afternoon was the Amateur Autumn Series final. This event was extremely entertaining and well supported. This year the title went to Martin Wilson on Database, Ballyorney Rascal, owned and ridden by Michael Woods a close second and James Curran rode his own horse, Kilbrackan to come third.
Saturday's events concluded with two exciting international competitions and a Puissance. The first international class was a speed challenge with a prize fund of €3,000. Almost 50 competitors took part with the overall winner being Trevor Breen on Ringwood Constructions Athea Clover Mist. Jordan Coyle on his mothers horse Cargo GI came second with Mervyn Clarke Junior on Sympatico came a close third.
Cavan County Council sponsored the second international class which had a prize fund of €6,000 with just over fifty competitors taking part. Alex Duffy emerged victorious on his mothers horse, Courtown with Cian O'Connor on Irish Independent Echo Beach coming a close second. Conor Swail on John Kellys Nepomuk came third. The remainder of the line up for this event comprised of.
Saturday evening's events concluded with an entertaining Puissance. In this event the The Big Wall went higher after each round. Twelve riders attempt this challenge and it went to five round, with three riders in Joint First jumping the Big Wall at 2.10m. Pirate with Jordan Coyle , Karla with Peter Smyth & Gerard Clarke on Iquem de Plessis.
Sunday was a day of finals starting with the 1.20m final for national riders at 8am. 35 national riders took part competing for a prize fund of €1,500 Darragh Kenny came first & Second, first on Linzi Johnstons Avinda Z and second on Waiting For William. Conor Drain on Tripoli came third.
The 1.30m Farnham Hotel Final followed immediately with 25 riders taking part. This event was won by Mark Kinsella on P.S. I Love You, while Sonor Swail came second on Norman Allens Cara Touche. Mervyn Clarke Jnr on Shalome Phoneix came third.
The afternoon's events got underway with the 4 year old final sponsored by the Anglo-Celt. 21 competitors were competing in this event which was won by Darragh Kenny on Carneyhaugh Allegro owned by Geraldine Drain. Trevor Breen came second on Oldtown KC owned by M & P Coffey while third place went to Mark Kinsella on Pheonix. This was a good class and was judge by Barry O'Connor, Eddie Moloney & Ian Fearon.
The 5 year old final very kindly sponsored by Classic Rugs, was hotly contested with popular rider Alexander Butler coming first on Croghan Hill Lady owned by Ray O'Reilly. Beer Hunter, ridden by Cathal McMunn came second while third place went to Mark Kinsella on Arabella.
The second last international competition of the event took place mid afternoon with just over fifty competitors taking part for a total prize fund of €3,000. Harry Marshall on his own horse Avdis Morning Star took first, closely followed by Trevor Breen on Oldtown Katie. Third place went to Dermot Lennon on Turboko.
The final of the 6 & 7 year olds was the last national class to take place and was sponsored by Calor Gas. The honours went to local Paul O'Shea on Prima de Revel, Carl Hanley came in second place on the Peter Glynn's Narcas Du Marais. Catriona Fallon on Knightfield Equestrian's Ladylady came third.
The finale of the evening and the overall event was the international Grand Prix which started at 8.00pm. The centre was full to capacity with keen spectators watching this excellent showjumping event.
Thirty six competitors started this €12,000 Grand Prix and nine made it through to the second round. The honours of the evening went Capt Shane Carey on the Minister for Defence River Foyle double clear round in 32.80. Olive Clare on Michael Duignan's Starboard took double clear in 35.02 and third went to Cian O'Connor oh Aileen Bryan's Rancorrado.
This brought to a close a very busy week of showjumping. Trevor Breen was Leading International Rider winning a prize of a Honda Motor Bike, and Darry Kenny was leading National Rider winning €500 voucher for Cladem Equestrian.
