The Ulster Region of the SJAI held a very successful two day Junior and Young Rider Development Championship Show at Portmore on 1-2 November.
The lure of the event was the award of three bursaries, based on consistency of performance over the two days.
The competitions provided an excellent opportunity for Juniors and Young Riders to compete at a high level over technical courses set to test skill and horsemanship qualities.
There was a very high standard of performance in the 1.20m Young Rider Championship section where a cool approach and superb jumping from Belfast girl, Rachel Cave, earned her and a well deserved International Bursary with Switzerland-based Jurg Knotts.
The 1.10m Junior Championship and associated Bursary with Dermot Lennon was a very hotly contested event with six riders in serious contention going into the final leg in Sunday's Grand Prix. Nerves certainly played their part in the final competition with poles dropping with serious regularity which kept the score-keepers on their toes. In the end, a very professional performance from Jaymie Smyth not only earned her a Grand Prix victory but also the Dermot Lennon Bursary.
Earlier in the day, Randalstown girl, Shannon Mackenzie and Peyroux, were crowned the leading rider/horse combination of the Show and were therefore the recipients of a Bursary with Cian O'Connor.
The Organising Committee would like to express their appreciation to Dermot Lennon and Cian O'Connor for agreeing to provide their two Bursaries which represent such an exciting and important training opportunity for our riders.
Thanks are extended to all sponsors for their support and to the large team of volunteers whose collective efforts provided such a unique competitive environment for those who attended and availed of the opportunities.
