January 10th saw Ballymena Mart host the Young Limousin Breeders annual Calf Spectacular.

This show saw a large entry of quality calves and they didn’t fail to impress judge Melanie Alford. The quality of the calves on show, both pedigree and commercial were a credit to all exhibitors and they demonstrated the true passion and determination the Limousin Breeders in Northern Ireland have.

The Savage Family, from Cullyhanna (Trueman Limousins) came out on top with their Supreme Calf Champion, Trueman Jukebox. This calf came out first in a very impressive class of bull calves, he then went on to be Pedigree Champion and later went on to beat the Commercial Champion and be crowned Overall Supreme Champion.

Jukebox was a January born natural calf out of a first calving heifer, he was sired by the £32,000 Ampertaine Elgin. Judge, Melanie Alford from Foxhillfarm livestock commented that her supreme champion was ‘a tremendous calf and no doubt one for the future’.

Following Trueman Jukebox right through from his class to being tapped out as Reserve Pedigree Champion was Martin Conway’s bull calf, Craigatoke James also sired by Ampertaine Elgin. This calf comes with a very impressive pedigree, out of one of Martin’s homebred cows Craigatoke Emma who is sired by the extremely well know bull wilodge vantastic.

The calf show also saw great quality commercial calves being produced, Gareth Corrie cleaned up and took Commercial Champion and Reserve honours.

Commercial Champion was a crossbred Limousin steer sired by Sauvignon and out if a Belgium Blue X Limousin cow. This commercial champion was bred by Vincy McMullan and then sold in Ballymena mart at a few months of age, this is where Gareth purchased this calf for £1,280. This steer then went on to be runner up to Trueman Jukebox and was given the title of reserve supreme champion.

Taking reserve commercial, also from Gareth Corrie was his march born heifer calf ‘Black Ice’ weighing in at just over 400kgs. This heifer was sired by Gareth’s stock bull, Stephick Flashi and out of one of his Belgium blue X cows.

‘Black ice’ has also had past championships to her name when she won champion calf at the NI Commercial Show at Balmoral in August.

Kieran McCrory, from the Bernish herd, also had a successful day at the calf show where he snapped up Best Homebred Heifer with his January born Ampertaine Elgin daughter, Bernish Julifortune. Melanie Alford commented on this heifer saying she ‘oozed style and should make a brilliant cow’.
