Ardmore herd retains Ayrshire title

Ayrshire breeder Michael Broadley officiated as judge at the 13th annual multi-breed dairy calf show, held at Moira.

Mr Broadley farms 11,000 feet about sea level in the Peak District, making his 200-cow Whitecroft prefix the highest herd in the UK.

Michael Hunter, left, Crumlin, owned the Ayrshire champion Ardmore Orphan 117, exhibited by Sarah Jones. Adding their congratulations are judge Michael Broadley, Derbyshire; and sponsor Denise Rafferty, Thompsons.

“It has been a very pleasing show, with some stylish calves and talented handlers,” he said.

Catching Michael Broadley’s eye to secure the supreme championship award sponsored by Thompsons, was Ardmore Orphan 117 from John and Michael Hunter’s 200-cow herd at Crumlin.

Sired by Nexus Dreamer, she is out of the home-bred Ardmore Orphan 95 – exhibitor-bred interbreed champion at the Winter Fair in 2011, and Balmoral Show champion in 2013.

Ardmore Orphan 117 was just six-months-old when she won the championship at last year’s calf show, and went on to secure the reserve championship at the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show in Malvern.

“The champion is an outstanding young heifer. She oozes style, balance, dairy character, and is really beautiful on parade. She just owned the ring,” added the judge.

Brother and sister Robert and Caroline McConnell, Ballyclare, claimed the day’s reserve championship and honourable mention awards.

Reserve champion Beechmount Prime Punch 2 was sired by De la Plaine Prime, and is bred from the VG85 (2yr) Haresfoot Pearl Punch. Born in June 2014 she was placed third in her class at Balmoral Show in May.

Michael Broadley continued: “This is another good calf. She lacks the strength of the champion, but is a stylish heifer, and is very pleasing to the eye.”

Honourable mention winner was the nine-month-old Beechmount Marie Girl 11, by Haresfoot Panache, and out of Beechmount Marie Girl 6 –recently named best heifer in the Ulster Ayrshire Club’s small herd category.

“This is another flashy calf with beautiful dairy character, and a future star,” said the judge.

Toast of the showmanship section, sponsored by OB Construction, was seven-year-old Cameron Carson from Ballymena.

“He is a truly exceptional young lad, and a very worthy winner,” explained the Michael Broadley.

Runner-up in the showmanship section was Stephanie Farren from Ballyclare, who was described by the judge as another talented handler.

Club secretary Jayne McConnell said: “Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s show. Thank you to our sponsors for their generous support, and to Michael Taaffe for the use of the facilities at Moira.”
