Big increase in heifer and fat cow numbers at Rathfriland Co-Op

There were just short of 500 cattle on Friday with a big increase in Heifer and Fat cow numbers.

173 weanlings from counties Antrim, Armagh and Down reached £845 twice for a 390k Lim from Millford and a 390k Ch from Warrenpoint. Weanling heifers sold to £800 for a 318k Lim from Castlewellan. A top of 274p/k was paid to a Lurgan farmer for a 250k Ch @ £685. Heifers sold to £1140 for a 660k Sim from Knockeden Farm. Bullocks topped @ £1155 for a 640k Lim from Cullion. A big entry of Fat cows sold to £950 for 754k from Annalong. All fleshed cows cleared from £80 to £100 over their weight. A batch of springing Ch cows from Tullynacross sold to £1280. Dropped calves contained a batch from Crumlin which were 2 months old. These sold @ £570, £555, £525 and £515.

A larger entry of sheep on Tuesday evening saw heavy lambs sell consistently from £74 to £76.50 paid to a Mayobridge farmer for 30k lambs. A Corbet farmer sold 24.5k @ £75.50 with £75 paid to farmers from Cladybeg Farms, Benagh, Kilkeel and Downpatrick. Store lambs cleared up to 360p/k for 14k @ £50.50 from Ballyward. The 22k to 23k lots sold in a fast trade to 309p/k for 23k @ £71 from Edenagarry. 164 Fat ewes and Rams sold to £100 for a Ballinderry farmer. Poyntzpass farmer: £84. Drumaknocken farmer: £83. Silverbridge farmer: £83. Ballyroney, Dromara, Ringsend and Kilcoo farmers all sold ewes @ £79 each.
