Bumper dairy sale at Rathfriland co-op

The best dairy sale for several months at Rathfriland saw just short of 60 head sell to 2180gns.

Trade for the quality lots was excellent. The Annalong herd averaged 2000gns for freshly calved pedigree heifers. Lot 78 was purchased by a Co. Armagh dairy farmer @ 2180gns with lot 79 @ £2150gns sold to the same purchaser. Lot 80, a similar animal sold @ 2050gns to another Co. Armagh dairy farmer. The Inch herd offered 18 animals to reach 1780gns for lot 33 with lot 36 @ 1650gns. Non Pedigree calved heifers sold to £1520 for the Inch herd. Swiss red bred heifers sold to £1350 with Pedigree Jerseys to 1300gns from the Braque herd. 2nd and 3rd calvers from the Tanvally hers reached £1200.

Friday’s weekly cattle sale saw a good entry including 100 bullocks selling to £1240 for a Drumlough farmer. A 572k Lim from this farm sold @ £1120 or £548 over its weight. A Leitrim farmer reached £1090 for AA heifers. Weanling calves cleared up to £825 for both male and female, i.e. 376k Sim male from Ballinran and a 428k Lim heifer from Carginagh. A Lisburn farmer sold a fat cow 750k @ £1035 with an Angus bull from Kilkeel @ 1320gns. 118 dropped calves sold to an amazing £455 for a BB bull from Donaghmore. A Lim bull calf sold @ £440 from the same farm. A Ballinderry farmer sold a Sim bull @ £405.

There was very little change in sheep price from last week. Hoggets were a lighter trade especially the ewe hoggets. 44 ewes with lambs at foot sold to £170 per head. Over 300 lambs saw some lots over weight and up to 26k reducing the overall average.
