For the past 20 years Eringold Calf Milk Replacers has worked closely with Dungannon-based A N Irwin Animal Feeds in order to make available its product range to distributors and farmers throughout Ireland.

“We have enjoyed a unique relationship with the company, who commit to deliver mixed pallets of its own feed with our milk powders to merchants the length and breadth of this island.

A N Irwin’s managing director Kenneth Irwin agrees: “The key driver for us has always been the unique quality of the Eringold range. Our ruminant team is committed to providing a high level of advice regarding the use of the
products here in Northern Ireland. And we also work closely with merchants throughout the rest of Ireland in the same way.

“We have also appreciated the proven commitment by Schils, part of the Van Drie group and the manufacturers of the Eringold calf replacer range, to source milk powder from those regions where their end products are actually sold.”

Eringold has been to the fore for many years in allowing local livestock farmers maximise the growth rates achieved by calves during the most crucially important weeks of their development. The reputation built up by the brand reflects the close co-operation that exists between Robert Mollan and the Schils group. The Dutch company has been a specialist manufacturer of milk replacers for many years. Its expertise in this field has been honed over many years as one of Europe’s largest producers of veal. The company currently rears one million calves on its own units annually.

Eringold’s Robert Mollan takes up the story.

“I have worked with the Schils’ management team so as to ensure that the Eringold range meets the specific nutritional needs of calves reared in Ireland.

“All the ingredients are of the highest quality and with the inclusion of Schils’ Protection Plus package, containing polyclonal antibodies and live yeast, the need to administer medication to young stock during the calf rearing phase is significantly reduced.

“The Eringold range also contains a stimulant to help encourage young calves consume concentrate. We recommend that starter should be offered to calves from Day 4 onwards. And, of course, this means that animals can be weaned proportionately earlier.”

A N Irwin & Sons has stocked Eringold Calf Milk Replacers since the launch of the brand. Kenneth Irwin is quick to confirm that the products perform tremendously well on local farms.

“Demand for the Eringold range continues to grow. Our customers recognise the quality of the products and the fact that their calves thrive from the instant they are placed on the milks. From a nutritional point of view the products are perfectly balanced, ensuring that calves are allowed to achieve optimal growth rates at all times.

“I have visited the Schils’ manufacturing plant in Holland. No stone is left unturned to ensure that the milk replacers manufactured there are consistently of the highest quality,” he explained.

The Eringold Range comprises the Super Calf Milk Replacer brand and the Once Daily Calf Milk Replacer brand. They can be used in all scenarios: bucket feeding; group test feeding and in automatic feeders. Robert Mollan again: “Both contain the exact levels of nutrients required by growing calves, when fed at the recommended rate. Eringold Super can be fed twice daily.

“Traditionally, Eringold Once Daily was fed to older calves as a means of reducing the labour input on farms. However, growing numbers of milk producers are now offering Once Daily twice-a-day as a means of achieving accelerated growth rates with their replacement heifers.

“Repeated research has shown that the attainment of accelerate growth rates, pre weaning, will allow heifers achieve earlier bulling weights, thereby facilitating the attainment of a 22 to 24 month first calving age.

“In addition, these animals will, invariably, secure higher lifetime milk yields. This reflects the higher lactation yields which they are capable of achieving and their greater longevity within a milking group.”
