Excellent trade for all stock at Markethill

An entry of 720 store cattle, weanlings and sucklers at Markethill on 24th October returned an excellent trade for all stock.

The quality of store cattle on offer was exceptionally high.

HEIFERS

The 220 store heifers were about the best quality entry of heifers for some time and prices were very strong. Good quality lightweight heifers sold to £220 for 394k at £865 from a Clough, Co. Down farmer. Main demand from £190 to £215 per 100 kilos. Middleweight heifers to £220 for 478k at £1050 from an Altnamackin farmer. Main demand from £190 to £214 per 100 kilos. Forward heifers to £209 for 536k at £1120 for a Poyntzpass farmer. Main demand from £190 to £207 per 100 kilos. Top price £1220 for 602k (203). Second quality heifers sold in an excellent demand from £175 to £185 per 100 kilos.

Dropped calves in particular sold in an exceptionally strong demand.

The 220 cull cow sold readily with beef-bred cows to £146 for 670k at £980. Main demand from £120 to £143 per 100 kilos. Fleshed Friesian cows to £110 for 610k at £670. Main demand from £95 to £108 per 100 kilos. Young friesians sold from £120 to £134 for 648k at £870. Second quality Friesian cows from £80 to £90 per 100 kilos and the poorest types from £55 to £75 per 100 kilos.

The 220 lots in the calf ring sold in an exceptionally firm demand from a packed ringside of customers. Bull calves (all under 4 weeks old) sold to £435 paid twice for Lim bulls. All top quality bulls from £280 to £405 each. The top 10 bull calves averaged £362 each. Heifer calves to £315 for a 4 week old blue. All top quality lots from £200 to £295 each. The top 10 heifers averaged £288 each. Good quality Friesian bulls sold from £60 to £108 each with a top of £145 for a 4 week old calf. Stronger Friesian bulls (8 to 12 weeks old) sold from £150 to £215 each. Reared heifer calves to £570 for a Char. Reared bulls to £660 for an Angus.
