Exceptionally good trade in cattle at Markethill

Store cattle and weanlings sold in an exceptionally good trade at Markethill on Saturday 2nd January. The current downturn in finished beef prices is not being reflected in the store cattle rings.

HEIFERS: Forward heifers sold to £190 for 526k at £1000 from a Richhill farmer. The same seller sold several heifers from £179 to £187 per 100 kilos and recorded the highest price of £1130 for 626k (181). Middleweight heifers to £204 for 416k at £850. Main demand from £175 to £199 for 448k at £890.

Dairy stock sold to £1120 at Markethill on Tuesday for a calved heifer from a Glenanne farmer. An Armagh farmer received £1000 for a calved heifer.

CULL COWS: The 130 cull cows sold in a firmer demand particularly for Friesian type cows. Cow/heifers to £176 for 662k at £1165. Beef-bred cows from £113 to £136 for 750k at £1020. Fleshed friesians from £92 to £102 for 792k at £805. Second quality friesians from £75 to £88 per 100 kilos with the poorest types from £50 to £70 per 100 kilos.

CALVES: The 210 lots in the calf ring continued to sell in a very firm demand. Good quality bull calves (up to five weeks old) sold to £390 paid twice for a blue and a Lim. Main demand from £270 to £335 each. Good quality heifer calves to £300 for a whitehead. Main demand from £200 to £295 each. Strong Friesian bulls (four months old) sold from £140 to £190 each. Young Friesians from £40 to £65 each.
