PLANS are well underway for the 2013 Irish National Holstein Show which takes place at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira on Friday, March 15.
With less than three weeks to go before the evening event, organisers are reminding exhibitors that the closing date for entries is Wednesday, February 27.
“Entries have been flooding in, and with the deadline for entries just around the corner, I want to remind breeders that completed entry forms must returned to me next week,” said Holstein NI secretary, John Martin. This is a major event in the club’s calendar, and it has attracted a bumper prize fund of over £5,000.”
The schedule includes 12 classes for maiden heifers, in-calf heifers, dry cows, in-milk heifers and in-milk cows. There is also a production class for cows which have produced a minimum lifetime yield of 50,000kgs; and a novice class confined to exhibitors who have not shown at any major show
(Balmoral Show or Winter Fair) in the last three years.
The evening event commences at 6.30pm, and English breeder Edward Griffiths from the Coachgate Herd, Gunthwaite Hall Farm, Penistone, Sheffield, will be officiating in the judging ring.
Holstein NI chairman, Jay Warden added: “We have been overwhelmed by the financial support received from sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all black and white enthusiasts to come along and see the cream of the province’s Holsteins on show.”
Class sponsors include: Holstein NI, Western Farm Enterprises, AB Vista, Global Genetics, Moores Animal Feeds, Bank of Ireland, FarmGate Nutrition, SC Feeds, Trioliet, Animax and World Wide Sires. The premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards are sponsored by John Thompson and Sons Ltd.
The junior championship is sponsored by McLarnon Feeds, while the intermediate championship is supported by Genus ABS. The best exhibitor-bred animal in each class (1 – 12) will receive a £25 cash award, and the exhibitor-bred champion will win £150, with £100 for the reserve. The exhibitor-bred championship is sponsored by Holstein UK.
The supreme championship line-up boasts a total prize fund of £600, and is generously sponsored by Dairymaster agents, Cookstown Dairy Services who are based in counties Louth and Antrim.
