Glarryford dairy farmers David and Ian Dunlop are holding a Fleckvieh production sale at Kilrea Mart on Tuesday 6th October.
The sales comprises of 20 first-cross Fleckvieh/British Friesian heifers ranging in age from 15 to 24-months-old.
Sixteen of the heifers on offer are daughters of high ranking Fleckvieh bulls Manitoba, Wallbrand, Willie and Vanstein; while the remainder are sired by the herd’s stock bull.
The herd introduced 100% Fleckvieh matings six years ago, and its replacement rate has been sliced in half.
Ian Dunlop commented: “We used to calve heifers at three-years-old, but the extra growth rate of the Fleckvieh has enabled us to serve heifers at 15 months of age, and calve them at two-years-old. We are holding this production sale to facilitate the change in our breeding policy, and the heifers on offer are surplus to our requirements.”
The Dunlop’s 110-cow herd is currently averaging 7,469 litres at 4.25% butterfat and 3.27% protein, with a somatic cell count average of 128.
The herd’s first, second and third lactating cows and heifers are all Fleckvieh bred (first and second crosses). First lactation heifers are averaging 6,713 litres, while cows in second lactation are averaging 7,998 litres, and those in their third lactation are averaging 8,066 litres. The herd’s non Fleckvieh bred cows in fourth and later lactations are averaging 7,332 litres.
“On seeing the production figures for ourselves, our decision to change to Fleckvieh genetics has been totally vindicated,” enthused Ian Dunlop.
