Forty seven Holstein bulls catalogued for Moira

Holstein NI’s 25th annual spring bull show and sale will take place at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira, on Wednesday 4th February.

Generously sponsored by Danske Bank, the pre-sale show commences at 10.30am and will be judged by Irish breeder John O’Sullivan from the Lisduff Herd based at Whitechurch, County Cork.

The sale will get underway at 11.30am.

Auctioneer Michael Taaffe confirmed that the catalogue includes 47 deep pedigreed bulls. “There is something for everyone, with ten bulls boasting PLI values in excess of £400. Bulls sell from the number 6, number 11 and number 22 PLI cows in the UK. We even have red carriers and heterozygous polled bulls.”

Herds represented in the catalogue include Ards, Ballycairn, Ballycrochan, Ballygrainey, Carrowcroft, Castletru, Cluntagh, Cullyhill, Drumeil, Hilltara, Killane, Majestic, Newry, Prehen, Redhouse and Relough.

The bulls on offer are sons of world-renown sires such as Mogul, Freddie, Galaxy, Supersire, Massey, Meridian, Numero Uno, Camelot, Grafeeti, Mayfield, Levi, Denim, Guarini and Goldday.

The catalogue also boasts top international cow families including Froukje, Crimson (Lacrest), Melinda (Pine Tree), Apple, Bliss, Danna, Roxie, Classy (Keopon), Roberta, Lizzy (Whittier Farms), Secret, Raven, Sharese, Europe and Sharon (Wiltor).

The highest PLI bull in the catalogue is Prehen Franklyn ET PLI £538, bred by the club’s vice-chairman Stuart Smith, and father Robbie, Londonderry. Sired by Alta Barney, his dam is Prehen Justice Froukje VG – the current number six PLI cow in the UK.

Robbie and Stuart Smith are also selling Prehen Frisby PLI £513. Another Alta Barney son, his dam is the home-bred Prehen Garrett Froukje VG-2yr PLI £423 - ranked as the number 22 PLI cow in the UK’s December proof run.

De Su Freddie Galaxy is behind the breeding of Relough Desperado PLI £472 from Ronald McLean and Sons, Donaghmore. His dam is the UK’s number 11 PLI cow Relough Legend Danna 2 VG88 PLI £451.

The Patton family from Newtownards have consigned the De Su Freddie Denim 646 son Ards Merlin PLI £448. He is bred from Ards Destry Missy ET VG86-2yr – her third dam is a full sister to the dam of the USA’s number one TPI bull Mountfield SSI DY Mogul.
