An entry of 355 beef cattle in Ballymena on Thursday resulted in a steady trade. Beef cows sold to 150p for a Lim 760kg at £1140, Fr cows to 109p for 630kg at £686, beef heifers to 208p for a Lim 530kg at £1102, beef bullocks to 199p for BB 620kg at £1233, Fr bullocks to 136p for 640kg at £870.

Ballymena livestock mart held their annual Christmas beef show and sale on Monday 30th November 2015. A total of 70 cattle were forward for sale and swiftly cleared in an extremely good trade considering the current price of beef.

Mr William Livesey, Leicester, England judged all the beef cattle in a very capable fashion and awarded Butchers best to a Blonde heifer belonging to Martin Johnston, Toomebridge. This was the second year in a row Martin won this award. Supreme champion was awarded to Paul Faulkner, Ringsend for a Lim heifer and Reserve supreme champion was awarded to Louise Conn, Limavady for a Lim heifer, also YFC champion. Robert Workman, Kilwaughter received champion Char, Ian McCaughern, Rasharkin champion Bel Blue. Crawford Wilson, Islandmagee won champion Blonde and champion any other breed. Martin Johnston won champion native breed. After the judging of cattle was completed, Laura Ervine, Newtownabbey judged the young handlers and awarded the Matchett family Perpetual cup to Victoria Workman, Kilwaughter who was awarded the overall champion after winning to 13 year old and younger class. Kelly O’Kane, Carnlough was second and Shannon O’Kane third. In the 14-16 year old class Jack O’Bryan, Newtownards won first and Hazel Nicholson, Newtownabbey second.

An entry of 38 pairs of fat lambs were presented for a show and sale at the annual Christmas Fatstock event at Ballymena mart. Nigel Logan of Hillstown farm shop had the difficult job of judging the sheep this year finding his champion pair with the first prize Texels from William McAllister, Kells. Weighing 22.5kg, later selling for £200 each Nigel backed his judging purchasing these lambs for his own shop. Reserve champion also went to William McAllister for the first prize Charollais weighing 24kg selling to Terence Doherty on behalf of Doherty & Gray. 1st prize Suff was awarded to E and J Gould, Ringsend, 23.5kg at £85 to Jacksons butchers, Ballynure. First prize Dorsets to W and K Carson, Ballymena, 21kg at £80 to Steven McGookin on behalf of Jenkins butchers, Ballyclare. First prize Beltex William McAllister 23kg at £100 to McMasters butchers, Whitehead. 1st prize Mules Logan Anderson, Kilwaughter 25kg at £70, first prize BF Sam Adams, Broughshane 28kg at £80 to McKees Maghera. A small sale of cattle in Ballymena on Tuesday resulted in a steady trade. Bullocks sold to £520 over for an AA 600kg at £1120 from James O’Neill, Portglenone. Heifers sold to £425 over for an AA 500kg at £925 offered by F and R Auld, Newtownabbey.
