Students on the Foundation degree in Agriculture and Rural Studies course at CAFRE Greenmount Campus have recently participated in a First Trust Bank Farm Business Management competition.
During Semester 1, First Trust Bank staff visited the class and discussed banking with the students and their Agri-Food fund which is available for developing livestock enterprises, purchasing land, developing buildings or reducing energy costs.
For the competition students had to produce a project. The first part of the project required the students to analyse the performance of a farm business by assessing the physical and financial performance of the farm enterprises. For the second part, students had to propose a significant change in farm policy or the development of a new idea for their farm business and assess the implications of the change. Students who presented the best plans in writing were then invited to an interview with the First Trust Bank judges: Eoin Donnelly, Karen Kidd and Kieran Mailey.
Overall, the judges were very pleased with the standard of student work and the competent manner in which students discussed their farm development plans.
The First Trust Bank farm business management bursary competition winners were first place Craig Barkley, Ballymena, Co Antrim and runner-up Melissa Nesbitt, Killen, Castlederg, Co Tyrone.
