Northern Ireland Hampshire Down sheep breeders were among the money in Carlisle on Saturday 26 September at the Association’s annual North West region show and sale where shearling ewes sold to a record 1,100gns whilst females averaged a record £566 for 41 lots, the highest number of female entries sold at the centre.
Kevin and Anna McCarthy, Comber, County Down, secured the third highest price of the day at 960gns for an in lamb Ballycreelly shearling ewe, sired by Ballycreelly Whynot and in lamb to Yarcombe Flashman.
She went home with J Hooks, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, who went on to pay 800gns for a same sired shearling ewe, also in lamb with twins by Flashman.
A call of 740gns from the same buyer secured a third Ballycreelly in lamb shearling ewe, this time by Ballycreelly Whatnot and scanned in lamb to Ballycreelly Devilsadvocate. Continuing with the Ballycreely breeding, they invested 700gns twice for two ewe lambs, one by Ballycreelly Whynot and the first prize winner by Yarcombe Topper.
A further bid of 620gns was paid for a Ballyvester shearling ewe entered by the McCarthys and bred by E Robinson, Donaghadee, County Down. Sired by Ballycreelly Whatthedevil and scanned in lamb with twins by the Royal Welsh interbreed champion Glanrafon George, she sold to L Cooke, Ormskirk, Lancashire.
A Ballycreelly aged ewe from the McCarthys was secured at 600gns by E Metcalfe, Nethy Bridge, Scottish Highlands. Scanned in lamb to twins by Yarcombe Topper, this ewe was sired by Moneycarragh Millionaire.
The McCarthys also led the ram section with a top bid of 500gns from J and G Swainson, Carlisle, Cumbria, for the first prize winning Ballycreelly shearling ram by Ballycreelly Whynot.
Leading the sale and setting a new female breed centre record at 1,100gns was a homebred Glanrafon shearling ewe from Jennifer Borsey and Martyn Sivill, St Asaph, Denbighshire. Sired by Glanrafon Khan and serviced by the Royal Welsh breed champion Glanrafon Marley, she sold to Paul Strickland.
