National Diploma students at CAFRE’s Loughry Campus were challenged by local food manufacturer Avondale Foods to design a new and innovative food product, culminating in a Dragon’s Den style pitch to company representatives, Diane Christie and Renata Lima.

At the beginning of the semester, student teams were presented with the Avondale product brief and developed their ideas, products and business plans over the following 14 weeks. Diane Christie, head of product development for Avondale Foods was very impressed with how well all the students interpreted the brief, identified gaps in the market and applied their skills to design their innovative food products.

All the products had unique selling points, but after careful deliberation, the winning team were awarded the Samuel Geddis Perpetual Cup with their delicious Beetroot, Apple and Chilli Soup. The judges were impressed with the inclusion of the superfood, beetroot, as being very on trend as well as a healthy soup, low in calories, fat, sugar and very tasty with an excellent colour and texture.

A delighted team member of ‘Souper Tasty’, Lauren Bresland said: “Our soup was designed for busy professionals who want something different, is healthy and nutritious but is suitable for special occasions, or a tasty lunchtime alternative.”
