Stormont Agriculture Committee Chairman William Irwin MLA has welcomed the securing of funding by Dairy UK Northern Ireland to help promote local dairy produce across the globe.
A dairy farmer himself Mr Irwin said he was “very aware” of the difficulties facing the industry post end of quota and he was keen to see new markets found for Northern Ireland dairy produce.
He stated: “This initiative represents a very positive step forward and an important opportunity to set Northern Ireland’s stall out to a wide audience across the globe. The areas being targeted by this export programme consist of countries such as China and the Middle East where dairy consumption is high and there are clearly massive opportunities to explore markets which would boost our export potential.
“I have stated before on many occasions that an element of our recovery in terms of the dairy industry, very much rests in finding new markets for our produce.”
He added: “In terms of our agri-food produce in Northern Ireland we really have no equal in regards to quality and taste and with this confidence in our dairy produce I would encourage our industry representatives to really sell our capabilities as a prime dairy producer.”
