There was a good show at Hilltown on Thursday 1st October, which resulted in a firm trade.

Top price of £70 was paid for 19k, from a Kilkeel farmer. Top rate of 386ppk for 11.9k making £46 from Newcastle farmer.

Cull ewes sold to £68 from Warrenpoint farmer.

Breeding stock: Suffolk and Texel aged rams sold to £260 from Markethill farmer.

SAMPLE PRICES: LAMBS: Castlewellan farmer 13.4k at £47 [350ppk], 16.1k at £54 [335ppk]. Newcastle farmer 16.6k at £54.50 [328ppk], 15.6k at £49 [314ppk], 20.8k at £60.50 [290ppk]. Tuesday, 29th September saw the first Suckler Show and Sale of Charolais calves at Hilltown Mart, over 400 calves were on show. The sale attracted lively bidding in both the heifer and bullock ring.  Judged by David Jordan from Ballygowan.

The show champion was a 496k bullock class winner making £1030, from Nula Mcshane of Hilltown.  Reserve to him was the 2nd placed 424k bullock making £1005, from Henry McGrath of Katesbridge. Third prize in this class went to Leo Fearon of Rostrevor, making £990 at 444k. Topping the trade at £1280, however, was a 392k bullock from Henry Quinn of Ballymartin.

First prize in the heifers went to Pascal Mcginn of Rostrevor, which made £1020 at 338k. Snapping up closely behind Pascal was Joseph Doyle of Rostrevor, coming second in the class, with a 342k heifer making £990. Third in this class was a 392k heifer making £1000, from John Mcshane of Hilltown.

However topping the trade in this class was a 390k heifer making £1030, from James Cleland of Castlewellan.

Hilltown farmer 396k at £995, 214k at £620.  Kilkeel farmer 426k at £985, 274k at £790. Banbridge farmer 380k at £955. Rostrevor farmer 428k at £980, 338k at £895. Heifers: Top rate of 354ppk at 226k making £800, from Kevin Rooney of Mayobridge. Mayobridge farmer 220k at £680. Kilkeel farmer 282k at £850. Newry farmer 258k at £700. Rostrevor farmer 238k at £640. Crossgar farmer 300k at £600, 314k at £820. Killowen farmer 338k at £860. Hilltown farmer 384k at £950, 338k at £820.

Fat cows: Top price cull cow sold at £920 at 764k from Annalong farmer. Sample prices: Hilltown farmer 754k at £880, 564k at £800. Kilkeel farmer 512k at £800, 608k at £780. Castlewellan farmer 506k at £650.

Breeding bulls sold at £1100 from Hilltown farmer.

Heifers: Top price heifer made £1170 at 644k from Hilltown farmer. Top rate of 219ppk for a 373k heifer making £830 from Rostrevor farmer.

Sample prices: Hilltown farmer 360k at £730, 632k at £1140, 538k at £1060. Kilkeel farmer 400k at £800. Kilcoo farmer 338k at £700. Newcastle farmer 562k at £1040, 282k at £515.

Bullocks: There was an excellent show of over 150 bullocks, top price bullock made £1300 at 700k from Mayobridge farmer. Top rate of 241ppk for a 340k bullock making £820 from Warrenpoint farmer.
