An entry of 440 cattle at Markethill continued to sell in a firm demand in all rings with a full ringside of local buyers and export agents in attendance.

HEIFERS

The 130 store heifers sold readily although prices did not realise the heights of previous weeks. Forward heifers sold to £203 for 510k at £1045 with a top price of £1090 for 590k. Good quality forward heifers sold from £180 to £195 per 100 kilos. Middleweights from £188 to £215 per 100 kilos with a top of £224 for 424k at £950. Lightweights sold readily from £190 to £229 for 312k at £715. Second quality heifers sold from £165 to £175 per 100 kilos.

An entry of 31 lots in the dairy ring at Markethill on Tuesday 12th May sold to a top of £1300 for a calved 2nd calver from a Newry farmer. The same seller received £1270 and £1140 for calved cows. Several more sold from £1000 to £1110 each. An entry of in-calf heifers (4-5 months) sold at £800, £780 and £670 for a Crossgar farmer. Young maiden heifers from the same owner sold from £480 to £600 each.

The 100 cull cows sold in an excellent trade for all classes. Beef-bred cows to £142 for 680k at £965. Top price of £1140 for 820k (139). Main demand from £120 to £130 per 100 kilos. Young friesians sold from £120 to £130 for 600k at £780. Fleshed Friesian cows from £110 to £121 for 590k at £715. Second quality friesians from £85 to £105 per 100 kilos and the poorest types from £60 to £80 per 100 kilos. Over 36 month clean cattle sold from £145 to £160 for 700k at £1120.
