Despite falling beef prices, store cattle trade has remained very stable this week at Markethill for an entry of 260 store cattle.

The quality of store cattle on offer was very good.

HEIFERS

Middleweight heifers sold to £208 for 418k at £870. Main demand from £185 to £207 per 100 kilos. Forward heifers from £180 to £199 for 580k at £1155. Good quality lightweight heifers from £200 to £233 for 326k at £760. Second quality heifers sold readily from £165 to£175 per 100 kilos.

SUCKLERS

The 30 lots of sucklers returned a very good trade. Cows and calves sold £1450 for a MB cow and bull calf from a Newtownhamilton farmer. The same owner received £1420, £1380 and £1340 for good outfits. Several more from £1000 to £1300. Bulls sold to £1460 for a char. A BB bull sold at £1440.

An entry of 135 cull cows at Markethill on Tuesday 19th May sold in an excellent trade for all types.

Beef bred cows to £153 for 810k blonde at £1240. Main demand from £120 to £136 per 100 kilos. Fleshed friesians to £122 for 690k at £840. All good quality friesians from £110 to £120 per 100 kilos. Top price £965 for 870k (111) with several lots from £800 to £945 each. Second quality friesians from £95 to £105 per 100 kilos with the poorest types from £65 to £80 per 100 kilos. Clean cattle to £183 for 598k at £1095.

The 190 lots in the calf ring sold in another very firm trade. The quality of calves on offer was exceptionally high. Bull calves to £400 paid twice for a 4 week old char and for a 4 week old Simm. All quality bulls from £300 to £380 each. The top 10 bull calves averaged £365 each. Heifer calves sold to £380 for a 5 week old Lim. Main demand from £200 to £285 each with others from £150 to £190 each. Good quality Friesian bulls from £70 to £132 each.
