It may be challenging times in the pig industry at the moment, but this did not stop a group of pig producers attending an awards night recently.

At the awards night 30 local producers were presented with their Level 3 qualification certificates for successfully completing the Sow Herd Fertility Challenge. The awards night was the culmination of a lot of hard work and commitment. In addition to attending workshops on management, nutrition, health and genetics participants also completed assessments relating to their own unit or a unit they work on.

Guest speaker at the awards was Mr Hugh McReynolds, chairperson of PCM Ltd.

Following the event Hugh said: “It was great to see so many enthusiastic pig farmers and it was especially good to see the next generation learning about pig husbandry techniques.”

In fact the next generation of pig producers was well represented at the awards with four sets of fathers and sons receiving certificates.
