The fortnightly sheep trade continued with an increased entry of numbers from the previous sale. On the day fat lambs sold to £93.00 and fat ewes to £86.00. leading prices in all as follows:

HILLTOWN

There was an entry of over 300 store cattle and weanlings at Hilltown on Saturday 21st February.They sold in a very strong demand and the quality on offer was very high.

Cull cows:– Top price cull cow sold at £1180 at 784k from Kilkeel farmer. Top rate was 180ppk at 548k making £1055 from a Kilkeel farmer as well. Sample Prices– Kilkeel farmer: 574k at £1025. Rostrevor farmer: 534k at £925, 734k at £815, 442k at £760, 622k at £760. Rathfriland farmer: 566k at £795. Cabra farmer: 632k at £800.

Cows and calves: A top quality entry of cows and calves sold to £1920 from Banbridge farmer.

Bulls – Breeding bulls sold to £1400 from Banbridge farmer.

Heifer weanlings: Weanling heifers included several pens of top quality lots. Highest price was £950 at 356k from Kilkeel farmer. Top rate was 287ppk at 290k making £835 from Dromara farmer. RATHFRILAND

Well over 300 head of cattle on Friday saw dropped calves sell to £500 twice for a Her bull calf from Kilkeel and a Lim bull calf from Ballyward. A further 3 calves from Ballyward sold at £450 twice and £420. Over 150 weanlings were topped by an Angus heifer 440k at £930 from Dromara. A 400k Angus from Crossmaglen sold at £865. Lighter weanlings were a flying trade with a Crumlin farmer selling a 264k Ch at £735. A Co. Armagh farmer sold a 218k Lim heifer at £610 and a 220k bullock at £590. Store heifers reached £1,045 for a 580k Her from Dromara. Fat cows sold to £870 twice for a 652k Lim from Ballyward and a 702k Her from Crossmaglen. A larger entry of bullocks cleared up to £1,310 for a 700k Ch from a Hillsborough farm. A Newtownhamilton farmer sold a 490k BB at £1,040. A Loughbrickland farmer sold a 400k Sim at £900.

BREEDERS: The largest entry of the season saw aged ewes with 2 lambs at £218, £212, with singles at £172, £172, £170 and £165 etc. Springing ewes to £160 each.

KILREA

A super entry of 240 calves on Thursday 19th February, met a flying trade for all types on offer. Continental calves required to satisfy demand. Good selection of 70 weanlings on offer.

Weanlings/suck calves: The sale of 70 weanlings met a super trade. Quality suckler weanlings on offer. More required to satisfy demand, being offered for sale at approximately 12.30pm weekly.

A good entry of just under 500 on Monday 23rd February met a good steady trade. Quality lambs and ewes realised premium prices. Lambs to £3.69 per Kg and £92.00 per head. Ewes to £134.
