Recently launched was the new dairy sires’ catalogue for the 2014/15 breeding season by Dovea Genetics.

Comprising the most comprehensive list of proven Holstein and British Friesian bulls made available to date by the Tipperary based company, the new listings include an exciting selection of the top available Holstein and British Friesian bulls plus many of the best bulls available across the range of coloured breeds: Norwegian Red, Fleckveih, Normande and Montbelliarde along with a range of easy calving beef sires suitable for the dairy cow

“The bulls in the catalogue represent a selection of the best dairy sires available in Italy, France, Ireland and Scandinavia,” said Dovea Genetics general manager Dr Ger Ryan.

“The sires available combine all of the traits now recognised as being crucially important within any dairy breeding programme. These include production, milk quality and health traits such as Somatic Cell Count, Longevity and Fertility Index.”

Dr Ryan went on to discuss the challenge of the falling milk prices, which is currently impacting on every local dairy farm.

“With milk prices now hitting rock bottom the good news is that our semen charges are among the lowest of any company in Northern Ireland this year,” he commented.

“However, it is worth pointing out that even though the semen prices are among the lowest, the quality of the bulls are among the highest available.”

The 2014/15 catalogue listing contains a number of new bulls never before available in Northern Ireland, providing much need outcross genetics, these include VH Peder, Ross and D Jul.
