NI Dorset breeders top Carlisle sale at 1,200gns

Six members of the Northern Ireland Dorset Club travelled to Carlisle, Cumbria with a total of nine ram lambs and 63 females for the Special Show and Sale on Friday, 28th August, held annually at Harrison and Hetherington Mart.

Male champion and reserve champion of the show was lot 480 presented by breeders William and Karen Carson’s Downkillybegs flock, Ballymena.

This smart September born lamb was sired by Olivertree NikNak and was out of a Trevilley Jumbuck ewe, he was later sold for 520gns to Sheila Gray, West Yorkshire for her Burley flock of Poll Dorsets.

The top price of the sale at 1200gns was realised by another Northern Irish bred ram lamb, Ballytaggart Whizz-Kid. He was bred by Thomas Wright, Kilraughts, Ballymoney and purchased by Sam Driver, Derbyshire for his 400 ewe flock. This strong lamb was sired by Ballytaggart Uppercut, a prolific show winner from Thomas’s 2014 show team.

Also enjoying a good sale for their ram lambs was first time entrants at Carlisle, R&M Coulter, Doagh, Ballyclare. Their top lot Browndod Washington realised 600gns to breeder Marianne Sheed for her Strathbogie flock in Aberdeenshire.

Also achieving 600gns was Richhill Wyatt a lot from Ben Lamb’s flock in Richhill, Armagh, eventual purchasers were G&M Cubitt, M&C Maybin and W&K Carson. In total the Northern Irish rams averaged £618.

The champion of the sale was a ewe lamb from the Bennachie flock of James Royan, Berwickshire, this was an October born ewe lamb, sired by the NI bred Richhill Tequila, who was top price entry at Carlisle show and sale in 2013 and bred by Ben Lamb. She achieved 750gns to a new breeder in Lancashire.

Individual ewe lambs presented by the local breeders topped £400 for Richhill Whoopi, a horned entry of Ben Lamb, Richhill, Armagh. 380gns was realised twice, once by another horned entry of Ben Lamb and secondly by lot 428 a Kildowney Smylie daughter presented by G&M Cubitt. The NI bred females averaged £283.

The top price female was a Downkillybegs Humdinger daughter from the Huish flock of David Rossiter, Devon. She realised 900gns to breeders W&K Carson and Ben Lamb. Pens of ewes and ewe lambs averaged £245 and the top was 420gns for a pen of 4 ewe lambs presented by William and Karen Carson’s Downkillybegs flock and purchased by Graham Meaden, Shewsbury.
