The NI Beef Shorthorn Club National Show was held at Omagh Agricultural Show on Saturday 4th July,

Judge for the occasion was Major John Gibb from Blairgowie, Perthshire, Scotland.

Omagh Show provided an idyllic setting for the NI Beef Shorthorn Club’s 9th annual national show.

There was a good display of Beef Shorthorns, presented for the Judge, Major John Gibb from the famous Glenisla Beef Shorthorn Herd in Scotland.

He was very impressed with the cattle presented and admitted that there were some very close classes especially the calf class which gave him somewhat of a challenge.

Judging began with the senior bull class. The winner was Richard Henning with the well fleshed Dunsyre Esquire bull from his Mullaglass Herd, from the famous Dunsyre Herd bred by Carey Combs in Scotland. This bull went on to win Supreme Overall Breed Champion.

He was sired by Langalbuinoch Barney out of Dunsyre Rose Magic 4th, closely followed in 2nd place by Uppermill Gladiator from James Porter’s Uppermill Herd.

Duncan McDowell won the Junior Bull class with Castlemount Hector, this seventeen month old Bull was sired by Waukaru Copperto and out of Chapelton Veronica.

There was a strong turnout of heifers born in 2013 and after much thought C&M Graham’s heifer, Croobview Georgina secured first place and Mr D McDowell’s white heifer, was placed second.

Five junior heifers were put forward in the next class and a very attractive roan heifer from A&A Armour won the red ticket. This heifer Castlemount Zulu Tessa went on to win Overall Reserve Champion, sired by Zulu of Ballyvaddy and out of Lougherne Tessa.

Gortlynd Honeah a heifer owned and bred by Mr K Lynd was the winner from a very impressive calf class.

She was sired by Boolies Beggar and out of Gort Carena.

Despite her young age, she showed great potential in the show ring.

This class was followed by the pairs. Out of the three pairs in the ring Mr D Mc Dowell’s matching pair took the winning rosette.

The Northern Ireland Beef Shorthorn Club would like to thank Omagh Show for hosting the National Show and Mr S Wilson who did an excellent job stewarding the classes.
