Sheep prices take an upward leap at Rathfriland Co-Op

Sheep prices took an upward leap on Tuesday evening at Rathfriland with lambs back over the £80 mark.

A top of £87 was paid for heavy texels with lots from £80 to £83.50. Fat ewe numbers increased to 351 head and sold in an exceptional trade. £117 was paid twice with main trade from £90 to £113.

Cullion farmer: 25.5k @ £79. Whitecross farmer: 23.5k @ £79. Banbridge farmer: 24.5k @ £79. Corcreechan farmer: 25k @ £79. Dunturk farmer: 19.5k @ £72 or 370p/k. Dromore farmer: 22k @ £78 or 355p/k. Newcastle farmer: 21.5k @ £75. Tassagh farmer: 21.5k @ £74.50.

There was another terrific entry of cattle on Friday with the weanling section recording 318p/k for 198k at £630.

Many weanlings sold from 250p/k to £290p/k. 161 dropped calves saw £560 recorded for a Castlewellan farmer who sold a further 2 @ £535 and £520. A Hilltown farmer reached £370 for Lim heifers. Strong Friesian calves sold to £350 twice followed by £335. Store heifers cleared up to £1060 (twice) for farmers from Kilkeel and Drumneath. Other top prices for heifers where from £1000 to £1050. An Annalong farmer topped the bullock section @ £1010 for a 590k Lim. A top pence per kilo of 209p was reached for steers, i.e. 354k @ £740. Springing heifers sold to £1030 for a Tanvalley farmer. Fat cows sold to £730 (twice) for 604k and 726k.

Dromara farmer: £320, £320, £290, £260 etc for Herefords. Dromore farmer: 10 Hereford heifers, £320, £320, £300, £295, £290, £260 and £240. Dromore farmer: 11 Herefords, £275, £260, £230, £220 and £220 etc. Braque farmer: 2 BB bulls, £270 and £240. Ballynahinch farmer: AA bull, £240. Hilltown farmer: Lim heifer £370, Lim bull £310. A batch of springing AA heifers cleared up to £1030. Other springers sold from £730 for a BGA to £860 for an AA. Fat cows sold to £730 twice for a 604k DAQ and a 726k BB. Both cows where from a Newry farm. Plainer Hol cows sold from £200 to £560 depending on quality.
