Increased silage intakes, improved milk production, enhanced fertility and very contented cows is the aim of every dairy farmer.

Ian Connolly and his son, Philip, currently milk a 225 cow dairy herd at Gortfad Road, Portglenone and are really impressed with the quality of silage that he has fed over the past winter and the evidence of this in the herd’s health and production.

Ian was the lucky winner of the Honda Four Trax quad bike in Genus ABS’ competition last spring for those farmers who used Powerstart silage additive. He commented: “It was a really welcome prize and has proved invaluable on the farm but the bonus has been my introduction to Powerstart silage additive. I have read all the claims about various silage additives but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

“The palatability of the silage has been such that we have had excellent intakes and very little waste. The cows have milked well - in fact they have milked so well that I have difficulty getting cows dried off. The herd has a current average of 7800 litres at 4.20 butterfat and 3.31 protein with a cell count of 165.”

Ian goes on to say that there has also been a boost to fertility. His current calving interval is 366 days and 65 heifers bred at the beginning of January resulted in 60 of them in calf to first service.

He added: “We operate a flat rate feeding system with a TMR ration, there is no top up feed in the parlour. The aim is a medium sized cow with excellent production and health traits, that will produce well under a commercial system.”

Stephen Lavery, Genus ABS explains: “It is well known that good fermentation will lead to increased milk from forage but the two extra factors in Powerstart are the fact that it contains a unique bacterial strain that has a significant impact on fertility and that this inoculant is effective no matter what the weather conditions.”

In addition to all of these nutritional benefits Genus ABS is rewarding customers with a free entry into a draw for a Suzuki Ozark 250 Quad Bike for every 100 tonne of inoculant purchased. This bike has been sponsored by JMK Quads, Loughbrickland who are authorized dealers for Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda quads in addition to accepting trade-ins and offering a service and repairs on all makes.
