Strong demand at Markethill

An entry of 550 store cattle and weanlings at Markethill on Saturday, 14th February continued to sell in an exceptionally strong demand.

A packed ringside of buyers from throughout N.I. and export agents ensured a very brisk trade. The quality of store cattle on offer was very high.

HEIFERS

The 140 store heifers included several pens of top quality forward lots. The entire entry of 75 forward heifers averaged 550k at £1102 (200). Top rate of £227 for 530k at £1205 with all good quality lots from £210 to £226 per 100 kilos. Highest price of £1415 for 634k (223). Middleweight heifers to £251 for 430k at £1080. Lightweights to £270 for 310k at £840. All good quality lots sold from £200 to £259 per 100 kilos and 2nd quality middleweights in excellent demand from £180 to £195 per 100 kilos.

Dairy stock sold to £1480 at Markethill on Tuesday paid for a calved 3rd calver from a Stewartstown farmer. The same owner received £1360 for a calved heifer. A Loughgall farmer received £1370 for a calved heifer. Newry farmer calved heifer £1220. Maiden heifers to £625 each.

CULL COWS: The 120 cull cows sold in a very firm demand for all classes. Friesian cows to £119 for 760k at £905. Main demand from £100 to £118 per 100 kilos. Young Friesian cows/heifers from £130 to £155 for 748k at £1160. Second quality friesians from £88 to £98 per 100 kilos with poor quality lots in excellent demand from £65 to £80 per 100 kilos. Coloured cows to £144 for 700k at £1005. Main demand from £120 to £143 per 100 kilos.

A very good entry of 225 dropped calves sold in an excellent demand. Good quality heifer calves to £315 for a 3 week old blue. Main demand from £220 to £310. Plainer types from £40 to £80 each.
