Two year old Clarkestown Cassius Tilly 2nd gained the supreme championship for Hugh A Clarke and Sons, Clarkestown, Gracehill, Ballymena, at the first Northern Ireland British Friesian Breeders’ Club which was held this week in 1970 at Banbridge.

The animal beat off a determined challenge from Ballylagan, Coleraine breeder, Mr Hugh M Campbell’s Ballylagan Ruth, before being declared champion by judge Mr E J Oswell Jnr, Winsford, Cheshire.

Mr Oswell, who was no stranger to Northern Ireland having officiated in the province on many occasions including the Balmoral bull sale in February 1970, praised the standard of the stock brought to the show at Banbridge.

Although there was a bit of tail on some of the classes the standard was “really very good” and he said that credit was due to the club members for getting “so many fine animals out”.

In all there were some 48 heifers forward and both Friesian Club president Mr Sam Marsden and secretary Mr J V Smyth were very happy at the response to this, the first of what they hoped would be many such sales.

Class results:
