TALES FROM THE FIELDS: Charolais bull tops sale at Ballymena

Glenarm breeder, Mr Patrick McAllister, sold a Charaolais bull for a top price of 1,000 guineas at the County Antrim Agricultural Association’s spring show and sale which was held at Ballymena Livestock Mart at the start of March 1978.

The Friesians topped 900gns, paid for a third prize bull from A E McCullough, Brookfield, Portglenone.

A pedigree Simmental bull, which was not shown, made 800gns for David Perry, Ahoghill.

The Herefords went to 700gns, paid for the supreme champion bull, exhibited by R W Bolton of Swatragh.

Dairy shorthorns topped 600gns for the reserve breed champion from the herd of S J Kelly, Dungannon.

The Galloway champion from William Thompson, Buckna, made 500gns.

The exhibits were judged by Mr J C McElheron, Cullybackey (Galloways), Mr Alexander Burnett, Richhill (Herefords), Mr David Perry Jnr (Simmental and Charolais), Mr Austin Perry, Ahogill (Shorthorns) and Mr Samuel Wilson, Crumlin (Friesians).

The catalogue comprised 122 lots. Class awards and prices in guineas.
