A crossbred Ayrshire from the Crumlin farm of Mr John M Price took the “blue riband” awards - the Andrews challenge cup for the champion dairy cow - at Saintfield YFC and District Agricultural Society’s 26th Show which was held this week in 1970.

Although the entries of pedigree Ayrshires and Aberdeen Angus had been disappointing there had been good turnouts of Herefords, Jerseys and Friesians.

The sheep section was also well supported and show secretary Mr John Beck reported increased entries in the horse classes.

TOUGH JOB

Friesian judge Mr James J Kelly of the Twenties, Drogheda, admitted that he had had a tough job nominating the champion before eventually settling for Barbican Dew Judy 5th, a nine year old cow shown by Mr David Heenan of Newcastle, in preference to a five year old animal entered by Purdysburn Hospital Management Committee.

“It was very close but the older animal had just that little more breed character,” explained Mr Kelly. He added: “She has carried her age very well.”

In the Jersey section, the championship prize went to Mr Carl Sloan of Dromara with Ormeau Nosegay while the best Hereford in the show and the Martin Perpetual cup went to Mr J H Fraser of Belfast with Ballyraggan 306th.

The Border Leicester was brought out by Mr Alex Minnis of Mossvale, Comber, while the top Suffolk came from the Crossnamuckley flock of Mr William Montgomery.

The Victoria challenge cup for the best crossbred in the sheep section was won by a horned hogget ewe which had been entered into the show by Mr H McCreery, Richhill.
