For the first time in almost living memory Lisburn and Saintfield Show was blessed with good weather last Saturday.

And, given the day that was in it, Seaforde Texel breeder Paul O’Connor really ‘made hay while the sun shone’. His outstanding two shear tip, Oberstown Usain Bolt, won both the breed and sheep inter-breed championship.

“The ram has a truly excellent pedigree and his semen is in strong demand at the present time,” said O’Connor.

“He was bred by the Farrell family from Co Wicklow and was the Texel Society’s Sire of the Year in 2014. Bolt’s top selling son sold for 52,000gns in Scotland.”

O’Connor’s Drumgooland flock is home to 30 pedigree ewes. The plan is to use Bolt as a stock ram for the foreseeable future.

The reserve inter breed sheep champion at Saintfiled was an eye catching ewe bred and exhibited by Ballymena Suffolk flockowner Patrick Donnelly. She has remained unbeaten in all her breed classes throughout 2015, having given birth to twin ram lambs back in the spring.

Meanwhile in the beef cattle rings British Blonde breeder Paul McGarry, from Crumlin in Co Antrim, was having a day out to remember. His second calving cow Budore Garnet, with calf at foot, won the inter breed beef championship, beating off stiff competition from Templepatrick Limousin breeder Robert Clyde.

Garnet had previously enjoyed an outstanding show career as a heifer.

“She calved at the beginning of March,” Paul explained.

“The sire of the calf is the elite French bull Aneto. The cow is in tremendous condition and our plan is to have her at most of the shows over the coming weeks.

The dairy championship went to Steven Robinson from Saintfield with an elite Holstein third calving cow Croagh Petrelle EX 90.

“She calved at the beginning of March and is currently giving 50 litres of milk per day,” said Steven.

“She has qualified for the McLarnon’s Dairy Cow of the Year Championship. So, all things being equal, she will take her place in the final line-up on the big day at Antrim Show.”

Saintfield’s Pig Championship was won by a Middle White gilt, exhibited by Ballymena breeder Ernest Gregg. She was part of a very special importation from GB last summer, which ensured that the Gregg family is unique in having all of the six remaining Middle White bloodlines in their herd.

“She is due to farrow for the first time in a couple of months’ time,” said Naomi Gregg.

“We believe her to be a very special animal. Demand for native breeds continues to grow within the pig industry. As a family we are committed to ensuring that these valuable bloodlines are not lost.”
