Trade for store cattle at Markethill remains very strong

Store cattle trade remained very strong at Markethill on Saturday with current beef price reductions have only limited impact on prices.

The 170 store cattle sold to a large attendance of local and export buyers.

HEIFERS

Lightweight heifers sold from £200 to £224 for 340k at £760. Good quality middleweights sold from £190 to £208 for 480k at £1000. Forward heifers sold readily from £185 to £203 for 540k at £1105. Second quality heifers sold in an excellent demand from £170 to £180 per 100 kilos.

SUCKLERS

The 60 lots of suckler sold in an excellent trade with a top price of £1800 for a Simm heifer and bull calf at foot. Followed by £1640, £1560 and £1550. Others sold from £1100 to £1350. A Ped. Char stock bull sold at £2100.

The 120 cull cows at Markethill on Tuesday 26th May sold in another firm trade for all classes.

The sale attracted cows from Co. Down, Tyrone and Antrim. Beef bred cows sold to £147 for 800k at £1175. Main demand from £120 to £137 per 100 kilos. Fleshed Friesian cows sold to £120 for 760k at £910 from a Downpatrick farmer. Main demand from£108 to £119 per 100 kilos. Second quality friesians from £90 to £105 per 100 kilos. The poorest types sold in an excellent trade from £65 to £80 per 100 kilos. Aged bulls sold to £120 for 900k Angus at £1080. Friesian bulls to £110 for 1110k at £1225.

The 140 lots in the calf ring sold in an excellent trade. Good quality bulls to £420 for a 2 week old Lim. The top 10 bulls averaged £330 each. Good quality Friesian bulls sold readily from £70 to £150 each. Heifer calves to £300 for an Angus. Main demand from £200 to £295.
