One of the most popular competitions in the YFCU calendar, group debating, takes place during November.

Kindly supported by YFCU platinum sponsor Elanco, the competition commences with three area heats and the best teams from each area will compete at the final.

At each heat, teams of three have to argue either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the motion in order to convince judges to side with their argument and award them a coveted place in the Northern Ireland finals.

Teams competing in the senior section of the competition receive their topics on the evening which encourages members to ‘think on their feet’ as they only have 30 minutes to prepare their argument before they debate it in front of the judges.

This encourages spontaneous debating and encourages members to work together as a team.

Junior teams who are competing receive their topic in advance of the competition to allow them sufficient time to research and prepare their debates.

The heats, which begin at 6.30pm, are as follows:

Tuesday 10th November, Co Down and Co Armagh clubs at Saintfield High School

Wednesday 11th November, Co Londonderry, Tyrone and Fermanagh clubs at Magherafelt High School

Thursday 12th November, Co Antrim clubs at Cullybackey High School

Representatives from Elanco will be attending the heats and final.

The NI final will be held on Tuesday 24th November in Magherafelt High School.
