Dairy sector campaign picks up momentum

REPRESENTATIVES of DairyUK (NI) met with MEP Jim Allister yesterday morning to highlight the need for the re-introduction of export refunds on a range of dairy products as a means of stabilising local milk prices in the New Year.
"Significant volumes of milk are being shipped to GB at the present time," DairyUK (NI) vice-chairman and Fane Valley chief executive, Trevor Lockhart, told Farming Life.
"And these sales are helping to support the overall market returns. But this is only a short term opportunity.
Once we get into 2009, the majority of local milk supplies will again have to be processed into powder and/or cheese. And this will mean selling products on to an international dairy market that has weakened significantly over recent months.
"The implications of this for milk prices are extremely concerning. We are taking steps now to try and prevent this. The introduction of export refunds on certain products would represent a step in the right direction.
