THE strength and quality of local Limousins was aptly demonstrated in the sunshine this week at Balmoral Show.
With over one hundred animals catalogued - more than any other beef breed- and with the breed's unique characteristics as perfect beef specimens clearly evident, the spectators at the ring were treated to a tremendous show as class after class of the
se golden-red animals paraded before the judge for the day, Mr William Cowx. Mr Cowx is a Limousin breeder himself and farms at Hudscales, near Wigton in Cumbria and is currently President of the British Limousin Cattle Society, and he paid tribute to the high quality of the stock on show, remarking that breeders here could hold their own with any others in the British Isles and he complimented them on their commitment and skills in helping to make Limousins the top breed both here and "across the water". This years Limousin show had an added attraction as a number of breeders from the Republic of Ireland had brought cattle up to compete for the sizeable and attractive prize list.
In judging some one hundred animals in over a dozen classes with 15 "special" awards - together with the various championships to be settled, Mr Cowx certainly had a major task, but he proved to be equal to the challenge and in record time completed the job. The following details the main results of his deliberations:
