THE Old Glenort herd, property of James Porter, Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn, claimed its third successive Aberdeen Angus supreme championship at this week's Balmoral Show.
Leading the Aberdeen Angus entry was Old Glenort Precious Pollot F867, a home-bred heifer, sired by the 2006 Balmoral champion, Haymount Wessuro. This heifer is no stranger to success in the showring, having stood second in the yearling heifer class
at last year's show. She is bred from prize winning genetics, her grand -dam was champion at the Royal Show in Stoneleigh in 1998.
Judge, Sean McKiernan from Corlismore, County Cavan, awarded the reserve championship honours to the five-year-old cow, Drumlister Willow, exhibited by the husband and wife team of John and Ann Henning, Moira.
Sired by the Perth prize winner, Idvies Euro, she was bred by Mrs Henning's father, Robert Campbell from Seaforde, and was originally sold to Jackie Porter from Katesbridge. Drumlister Willow was purchased by the Henning's last year at Mr Porter's herd dispersal in Dungannon.
The 10-cow Drumcorn herd has been exhibiting at Balmoral Show for 16 years, and claimed its fifth reserve breed championship title.
NI Aberdeen Angus Club chairman, Danny Ward from Saintfield, said: "It's been a great Balmoral for the Angus breed. We've had our biggest entry of Angus cattle for many years, and it is encouraging to see so many established breeders and first-time exhibitors making the effort to support the show.
"I would like to congratulate the winners, and thank everyone for taking part."
