THESE little pigs owned by Walter Irwin, Dromore (Berkshire & Tamworth) and Rebecca Gregg, Ballybollen (Saddleback) will not be going to market, well not yet anyhow.
nstead they will be joining other Rare Breed Pigs at the Antrim Show on Saturday 25th July 2009 for the first time in twelve years.
Breeders of Middle Whites, Saddlebacks, Berkshires, Gloucester Old Spots, Tamworths and Large Blacks will all be there showing off fine specimens of these rare breed pigs. The event has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of the following companies who have contributed a total of £300 to the prize fund: McBurney Transport, McCaughan Animal Health, Caddy Veterinary (Specialising in all matters equine) Hillstown Farm Shop, Ballymena Market, H Colvin & Sons Agricultural Merchant, P Mackle Northern Nutritional Services & NFU Grange Branch who all recognise the potential benefits in developing larger herds of these magnificent beasts. Further sponsorship may be forthcoming prior to the event.
Demand, however, far outstrips supply and although in recent years, consumers have been demanding a more flavoursome pork product from their butchers in contrast to the commercially produced bland pork products currently on the market, the reintroduction of these rare animals has not yet reached the point of viable commercial farming. Thus availability is for the connoisseur and those select few who are in the know as to where these products can be obtained.
Demand no doubt is partly due to the proliferation of TV chefs, who in seeking out the best in pork products, have whet the public appetite to try pork from these rare breeds who are reared as pigs should be, naturally in fields. The results speak for themselves, offering the public a leaner, firmer pork product with distinctive flavours.
In the meantime, their unusual colours, features and mild temperament can be enjoyed by all at many of the agricultural shows throughout the province.
Owners wishing to enter should contact Linda Davis, 18 Knowehead Road, Templepatrick, BT39 0BX. Telephone/Fax 02890849466. Email antrimshowsec@hotmail.com NO LATER than 1stJuly 2009.
NB: All pigs MUST have OADF declaration of movement (Green Form) and Aujeszky's certificate of Negative results must accompany all entries.
Young Handlers are welcome to enter on the day.
Judging will be by Mr Cyril Millar of Coleraine.
