RECORD crowds flocked to Antrim Agricultural Society's 102nd annual show, which was hosted by Greenmount College for the tenth successive year.
Show secretary, Linda Davis, described the event as a family day out.
"It has been a great show." she said. "The weather has been fantastic, and we have had increased entries in all section, as well as record numbers of spectators. Today's show far
surpasses the numbers at our centenary show two years ago."
Visitors to the event included PSNI Chief Constable, Sir Hugh Orde; Ulster Unionist leader, Sir Reg Empey; and Brian King, president of the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society.
Highlights of the event included the finals of the Northern Bank/NISA sheep championship; County Antrim YFCU Competitions Day; pony club games; and the final of the British Blue heifer derby. The children's pets class was another real crowd-puller, with upwards of twenty entries ranging in size from an alpaca to a hamster.
Texel breeder Adrian Liggett from Fintona, County Tyrone, claimed the £100 cash prize and a crystal trophy at the final of the Northern Bank/NISA sheep championship. This competition has been running throughout the summer, with ewes qualifying for the final at other local shows. Judge, Allan Wight from Midlock, Biggar, Scotland, awarded the reserve place to a Suffolk ewe exhibited by Norman Robinson from Downpatrick.
In the cattle section, the interbreed beef line-up was led by Ironstone Bomber, a tremendous senior Limousin bull, brought out by local exhibitors A and T Clyde from Antrim. The reserve beef title went to the Blonde d'Aquitaine champion, Doncombe Aga Khan, the senior stock bull in the McElroy family's Ivaniskey herd at Dromara, County Down.
Ayrshire stalwart, James Getty from Kells, Ballymena, claimed the interbreed championship award in the dairy section. Reserve place went to the Jersey leader, brought out by the Fleming family from Seaforde, County Down.
The Aiken family from Dromore, County Down, scooped the interbreed sheep championship with their Border Leicester ewe. Standing in reserve position was a Texel shearling ewe bred by Alastair Gault, Newtownabbey.
