Aberdeen Angus bulls to 4,300gns at Dungannon

BIDDING was fierce from start to finish as Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to a top of 4,300gns at this week’s breed society show and sale, hosted by Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.

Society chief executive Ron McHattie was delighted with the day’s trade, confirming a 97% clearance with 22 bulls selling to level at £2580 per head. “Commercial bidders were out in force which is testimony to the importance of the Aberdeen Angus brand to the Northern Ireland beef industry.”

Sale leader at 4,300gns was the second prize winning Sess Eon L567, a May 2011 born Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 son from Margaret Buchanan’s long-established herd at Augher in County Tyrone. He was bred from the Cheeklaw Eirwyn D165 daughter Sess Ethel G366. With a Breedplan milk value of +14, he sold to Kevin Murray from Cullyhanna, Newry, County Armagh.

Next best at 4,000gns was the reserve male champion Richhill Rambler L666, brought out by Robin Lamb and sons, Stuart, Ben and Peter, from Richhill, County Armagh. Born in March 2011, he is by the herd’s former stock bull Drumcrow Lord Hunter J354, and is bred from the Baronagh Euro A043 daughter, Richhill Rosanna G067 – one of 35 cows in the herd which was founded in 1999.

This bull won his class at the NI Aberdeen Angus Club’s 8th annual Calf Show in November, while his dam won the exhibitor-bred championship at Balmoral as a two-year-old heifer. Highest bidder was Mr D Dunbar from Newtownstewart, County Tyrone.

The third prize winning Drumawhey Pansonic L181 from Samuel and Timothy Scott’s herd based at Newtownards, County Down, came under the hammer at 3,400gns. He was sired by The Moss Mr Eshton D409 son, Old Glenort Knockmore J153, and is out of a home-bred dam by Laymore Phantom A346. Born in February 2011, this bull is in the breed’s top 25% for daughter calving ease +1.6, and has an eye muscle area of +2.3 and a milk value of +6. This one sold to John McArdle from Middletown, County Armagh.

The husband and wife team of John and Avril Robson, Augher, County Tyrone, realised 3,150gns for the May 2011 born Glenhoy Black Titan L447 ET. He was sired by the Canadian-bred DBRL 03M Titan 4T, and is bred from the TC Stockman 365 daughter, Coldstream Blackbird 68J ET. This first prize winner is in the breed’s top 20% for daughter calving ease +2.0, and top 10% for milk at +14. He sold to Wilfred Scott from Castlederg, County Tyrone.

Following close behind at 3,100gns was the third prize winning Birches Daniel L956 consigned by new breeder Robert Davidson from Banbridge, County Down. Bred by the Matchett family, this April 2011 born entry is by the Birches herd’s Irish-bred stock sire Carrigroe Fred, and is out of the Coneyisland Legend daughter, Carbery Emma. Buyer was Robert Anderson, Richhill, County Armagh.

James Campbell, Upperlands, County Londonderry, paid out 2,800gns to secure Lana Black Lordeasy L997 bred and exhibited by Alan and Lana Cheney, Trillick, County Tyrone. Born in April 2011, he is sired by Blackhaugh Easy Papa G728, and is out of the home-bred Lana Black Ladyrose F741. This one is in the breed’s top 10% for daughter calving ease at +3.0, and has a terminal sire index +33, and self replacing index +45.

Also selling at 2,800gns was the second prize winning Leestone Lord Harry L066 brought out by first-time exhibitor John McKibbin, who runs 11 pedigree cows at Kilkeel, County Down. Born in July 2011, this one is by Friarstown Dan Cater H094, while his dam is Aughamona Eve – purchased from former Irish rugby international Donal Spring. Buyer was suckler herd owner George Wylie, Highcross, Tullyhogue, County Tyrone.

The first bull into the salering Lana Papa L931 came under the hammer at 2,700gns for Alan and Lana Cheney. Born in January 2011 he is by Blackhaugh Easy Papa G728, and is out of the home-bred Lana Poppy G814. With an eye muscle area of +3.8 he is in the breed’s top 15%, and has a terminal sire index of +32 and a self replacing index of +45. This one was knocked down to A Porter, Mountjoy, Omagh, County Tyrone.

Judge Michael Smith, Cootehill, County Cavan, awarded the male championship ribbons to the March 2011 born Clogher Valley Emperor L071, from first-time exhibitors Ian and Gillian Browne, Fivemiletown, County Tyrone. Sired by Netheton Eastern Cruz, he is bred from the Skaill Edward B566 daughter, Glenhoy Ellie F016 – one of 15 breeding females in the herd which was founded in 2009. This one caught the eye of James McClements from Newtownards, County Down, at 2,500gns.

Females peaked at 1,600gns, paid to Neville and Ivan Forsythe, Moneymore, County Londonderry, for the nine-year-old cow Coltrim Lady Joy D851. She is by the noted Fordel Eisenhouwer Y423, and out of the Coltrim Proud Esquire daughter, Coltrim Lady Joy. Included in the price was her five-week-old Curragh David J513 calf. This cow and calf outfit joins Adrian and Graeme Parke’s Coolermoney Herd based at Strabane, County Tyrone.

An in-calf heifer from the same vendors sold at 1,350gns to pedigree breeder Andrew Scott, Ballyclare, County Antrim. The September 2010 born Coltrim Evana K634 is by Belhaven Premandonna G030, and bred from the Nightingale Regent R27 daughter, Coltrim Evana A346. This one is in-calf to Curragh David J513.

Maiden heifers peaked at 800gns, realised by the female champion Corriewood Black Belle L144, bred by Jim and Valerie Peters, Castlewellan, County Down. Born in November 2011, she is by Woodvale Mega Limits J047, and out of the home-bred Corriewood Pearl F352. Buyer was A C Moore from Ballygawley, County Tyrone.

Sponsor Paul Eakin of Allan Montgomery and Co chartered accountants, Filvemiletown, was on hand to congratulate the prize winners and present the awards.
