Aujeszky status latest

THE Ulster Farmers’ Union has welcomed the European Commission’s formal recognition that Northern Ireland pig producers have achieved Aujeszky Disease (AD) free status.

UFU Pork and Bacon Chairman Ivor Ferguson said: “The European Commission’s recognition of the north’s freedom from Aujeszky’s Disease is good news for the whole economy, opening up export opportunities for pig producers in Northern Ireland and significantly increasing trading opportunities. We are also pleased that the Republic of Ireland has achieved disease free status today, opening further export opportunities for the pig sector.”

Mr Ferguson continued: “Local farmers, DARD and the wider industry should be congratulated for the hard work that enabled us to reach this position. The UFU have been lobbying for eradication of AD since 1992 and after a frustratingly slow start and consistent lobbying from the Union, we have now achieved AD free status.”
